May 2, 1945. Just up the street from the Reich Chancellery, a heavily constructed apartment building in the plaza on the west side of Hermann-Goring Strasse, is occupied by German troops who are putting up stiff resistance.
The Russians have a heavy machine gun and a light infantry gun but it doesn't seem like enough firepower to dislodge the entrenched Germans. One squad of Russians is trying a flanking movement past a wrecked Kublewagon. A Russian commander is looking back down Hermann-Goring Strasse to the JSU-152 coming around the corner of the Reich Chancellery. He knows the Germans won't surrender and is thinking of having the JSU-152 put a high explosive 152 mm round into the building and bringing down what is left of it onto their heads.
The Germans inside the building are a mixed lot of SS, Wehrmacht and Volksgrenadiers. The SS men know there is no surrender to the Russians and are fighting to the death. The Volksgrenadiers are not so certain and are holding back while a crawling soldier looks back and waves them forward.
As the shadows lengthen inside the ruined building, the rumble of the JSU-152 can be clearly heard over the sporadic gunfire and the concussion of grenades.
