I know there are many people every year who want to attend the various Toy Soldier events like the London Show, the Chicago Show and the N.Y. Symposium. I especially miss good friends like Chuck Harris, who are prevented from attending for health reasons.

Well, I can't do anything about some of the shows, but I will be helping out with the Symposium, thanks to my lovely wife. She bought me a fancy video camera which records directly to DVD. I am going to make a DVD of the symposium for Chuck Harris. I am also going to keep an open phone line to Chuck, and pass the phone around to Andy, Gordon, Rick from Figarti, and any other attendee who wants to help make Chuck feel like he is present at the Symposium. Between all the phone conversations, and the DVD, I hope it will be the next best thing to Chuck being there.

Louis great idea. I would be more than willing to buy a DVD of your get together. You could set the camera up for some of your discussions and of course you can give us a video tour of your museum.

My wife should get the credit. She suggested the whole thing. I just thought about Chuck, because I know how much he would like to attend, and I wanted to do something nice for him.

Louis:

Give me more tips on keeping the wife happy with Toy Soldiers.

So far we are doing pretty good - she gave me a all King & Country Christmas and is buying a curio cabinet for the office on my birthday this month. I want to keep her going - you know what I mean :)

She is doing very well so far with all the space that I take up now at home. But, you can never have to few tips.........

Cheers, Ron

Ron,

As a lobbiest, I shouldn't have to tell you how to do your job, but when it comes to wives and toy soldiers, I have one word for you: jewelry!

Louis:

Thanks - Check, I think I have that one down. Isn't wonderful to have Women who understand the passion??

What can I say. Thank you very very much for thinking of me.

Chuck,

Its he least I could do. You are a good friend, and a veteran. It will be an honor and a pleasure for all of the attendees of the symposium to make you a part of it in any way we can.

Your friend,

Louis

I've seen photos on www.toysoldersusa.com but what is the Symposium?:confused::(:D

A symposium is an ancient greek term (see Plato) meaning a get together where people drink wine and discuss a particular topic. The New York Toy Soldier Symposium is a get together for toy soldier producers, dealers and above all collectors to enjoy some great meals (5 star cuisine at one of the oldest private clubs and one of the highest rated Chinese Restaurants in New York City), tour some rather extensive collections (Mark Hoffman, THE Artillery collector; Larry Lo, perhaps the finest collection of pre-1990 K&C figures in the world as well as an extensive collection of K&C from 1990 to the present; my collection); hear from the minds behind some of the finest Toy Soldiers on earth (Andy & Gordon Neilson, K&C; Rick Wang, Figarti) and generally enjoy some good fellowship with like minded individuals. It is hosted by Hans Hedrich, Lawrence Lo and myself, runs for 3 days the second weekend each March, and includes a visit to the Toy Soldier Show in Schutzen Park, New Jersey on the Sunday morning (the first big Toy Soldier Show on the east coast of the United States each year). In addition to the 2 dinners, there are 2 lunches, one hosted by myself at my home while the tour of my collection and Andy's talk are ongoing, the other hosted by Andy at the Wollenski Grill (the casual portion of Smith & Wollenski, one of the most famous steakhouses in New York) after the Sunday show. There is no charge to attend, but space is limited, so anyone wishing to attend must respond as soon as possible after we post the announcement.

I'd like to elaborate a little on what Louis said.

I hadn't been a collector that long (less than a year) when I found about the Symposium, almost accidentally. Louis, Hans, Larry and Andy were very welcoming and magnificent, as was Gideon, at whose late and (definitely) lamented store Andy gave his talk. I got to sit next to Andy at dinner and it was a great experience, just tremendous. Plus Louis' collection, what a collection. At this point this needs no embellishment.

However, I also got to see Mark Hoffman's collection, which he has in his offices. I went with Doug Luna, a very experienced collector, and it was just incredible. Never seen anything like it for the breadth and depth of his collection as he collects everything.

So, if you can make it, you should. It's just a great experience if you're a toy soldier collector.

One minor correction. There is no more show at Schutzen Park. I saw a flyer at the East Coast Show that they're moving it somewhere else.

P.S. I was strictly a WW II collector until I saw Louis' collection. No more. As a result, I now collect other K & C lines show as Roughriders, Nelson's Navy, Marching Bands. It's dangerous to go there :)
