Have noticed a fair amount of chatter re: Romans on a few different threads recently and wonder what the current level of interest is among us. It is not an area that I personally have had a ton of experience with but the more I see, the more intrigued I am.

It looks like Conte has been making new Romans of late, and I know there is a lot of speculation about FL creating some as well. Also have recently seen some of Chris' lovely looking Russian examples along with his Andrea commission.

In browsing for new models to build and paint I see a lot of Roman subjects and note that El Viejo Dragon in particular make a huge assortment of these. This is one of my favorite sets and may include it in a next order. It is called, "Yes Sir!" I think.

I would be interested in seeing images of peoples Roman collections if you are in the mood to share them.

My current interest level is very very very high- the Roman empire and modern army figures are what I am currently collecting.

It's so odd MD but Romans are a very popular period to war game yet seem to be hard to keep consistent with for toy soldiers. East of India did some great figures, their scorpio was something that hadn't been touched in ages. Still, they were doing the 14th in GB but that appears to have fallen through. I tell people that if they want to collect EoI Romans that the Persians would work very well for the campaigns in Syria.

Blackhawk released their Zama line back in 2008 (I think) but that fell apart given the shoddy packaging. Their are some gems in that line though- specifically, Scipio.

So, since Matt from FL said Rome is a no go, I am just going to collect Aeroart Romans for the time being- that way, should FL decide to go with Rome, the paint quality and scale will not be too far off. I was very very fortunate McKenna77 reached out to me earlier this year and traded a ton of his KC Barbarians and Romans for some of my KC WW2 sets. I got a chance to finally put them all out together when I did a presentation for my sons' Latin 3 AP class a couple weeks ago. Won't be able to do that again till I move back into my "new" house :)

Conte- the new set is fantastic. Looking forward to more releases which seem to be the bane of his company.

Love that model kit- please let me know who did that as I think I may snag it and get it painted too :smile2:

I have heard that King & Country plan to revisit ancient military. No idea whether this means a return to Rome or maybe Alexander or earlier Greece. -- Al

I'm interested. Once I finish my current British army plans I'll be looking for something new. The reason I'd like to collect Romans is the huge variety of colourful enemies they had. The exact time frame I'd like is hard to pin down put if it was the Punic wars, there's Celts, Carthaginians and Numidians. It would all make for a very colourful and action packed dio.

I'm interested, but I'd prefer 54mm/56mm (Stadden size), not the larger Chinese scale. I have some old Blue Box Romans (the Julius Caesar set), and I've eyed the old Sanderson and Rose figures from time to time.

Prost!

Chris, why don't you log into Colorado Miniatures site and look at all the Romans from El Viejo Dragon alone. This is one of theirs. :)

Have to admit I am sort of hoping that FL will eventually start producing these, and otherwise have been most impressed with the Russian figures I've seen on here.

I'm a dope- in your original post you mentioned the company- sorry bout that. ....:salute::

I want FL to do them in the WORST way........the Russians do them exceptionally well too. Time will tell I suppose........

Chris, I've been seeing a lot of castings and finished figures on eBay recently, from sellers in Russia and the Ukraine. Some may be knockoffs of kits, others not, but many are offered at reasonable prices, eg, around $10. Some sellers have the same figure for sale as an unpainted casting and as a painted figure, also not unusual for the Russian manufacturers. I've thought about picking up some of those figures, too. You might find it worth a look.

I've noticed the same thing with samurai figures, too. Nicely done figures, as castings or painted, for reasonable prices.

Now, I'm not talking about connoisseur-quality finishes, but certainly comparable to some of the contemporary matte figures, say, K&C or the better Del Prados.

Prost!

A company called Soldiers have been doing nothing but Romans lately.

@ Brad- funny you should mention that as I have seen them as well. I am so broke right now though.........<shudders> it's scary :redface2:

@Marco- I think that Conte set is fantastic. You mention a company called "soldiers"- is that it- just soldiers?

These are quite large figures.Would probably match up with KC more than others.Mark

It's kind of funny for me really as I collect Modern and Ancients with WW2 somewhere in between.

For ancients- you think Rome would have more- but look at the Persian Empire- they were jsut as big and East of India has done a really bang up job on their Persians. How about the wars of Alexander??? I only ever see St. Pete get into the Macedonians.

Modern conflicts- I have a hodgepodge from all sorts of companies.

I use the analogy "Bookend collector" as I span so far back and so current with little in-between (anymore). On the one end, I buy up ancients but they seem to be viewed as too ancient or not current enough. On the other end of the spectrum, I am told the modern conflicts are "too current" to market. go figure. :)

Very interested in Romans, never liked any of the normal manufactures figures past modern times (17th century on).
Recently for first time purchased some Romans and a Barbarian made in Russia.could only afford a few but were absolutely stunning IMO. Never visited trade shows but
will try to get to some now that I've seen these.
