Seems to be a lot of painters showing their figures on this forum at the moment. I've been working on some more New Hope Design figures I thought that I would post.

The first is an Imperial German Army officer from around 1914.

The second is a British Askari.

Great kits, enjoying building them!

Scott,

nice work and its great to see some of these figures in the Forum. Gloss does look very nice with fine deatiled painting.

Where you get these from? Are they still on sale anywhere, as I have a few of the Naploeonics but haven't seen them for years.

regards,

John

Thanks John,

I picked these two up recently off e-bay but I have been buying old unmade kits and figures in need of restoration for a few years now.

I have been buying all the figures I used to see reviewed in Military Modelling in the 80's when I was a kid- a mid life thing!

Here are a couple of Academy 1/35 figures I painted not too long ago painted. These kits are cheap and I believe a little underrated as the poses are very good.

As you can see I've just come to glossy figures.

Scott

Scott,

Have you used Humbrol gloss on these? The only paint I have used for the last 20 odd years now, gives a nice deep finish.

Like these. {bravo}}

Only 20 years of Humbrol ????

I've been using Humbrol for over 40 years.... Oh now I'm showing my age ^&grin

John

I love the gloss finish on your WWI German officer and Askari, Scott! You've achieved a finish that looks like a glaze. Are those figures by Old Guard? The bases make me think so.

Well done!

Prost!

Hi John ^&grin

Before the gloss days I was using Humbrol matt, but I've still got some catching up to do........:rolleyes2:^&grin

Jeff

I absolutely agree about the glaze finish on the two glossies. What's the mix you're using - they are beautifully finished - well done indeed - johnnybach^&grin

Thanks gents. I enjoy showing them.

Jeff,

They are painted mainly in Tamiya, Vallejo and Games workshop matt acrylics. The only humbrol I have used is the silver for the German Officer's buttons and epaulettes where I used Humbrol 56 aluminium metallic. I guess you could argue that they are not true gloss, as the gloss is the crystal clear acrylic gloss finish, not the paint.

Johnny,

The gloss finish is straight from the aerosol can. I just make sure that I spray it on a warm day and apply a second coat a few hours later. It does give a glaze like finish.

Brad,

Well spotted regarding the bases. Some of these figures have Old Guard Ltd on the packaging. One actually has Old Guard Ltd, New Hope Design printed.

I gather there was an arrangement between the companies? I really don't know anymore but would be interested in any further info you could add.

A figure I'm currently working on came as an unmade kit and is branded as a 'Men At Arms' Autographed Collection figure by New hope Design. Just to add to the confusion.

The Old Guard square bases are much more substantial and look better than the octagonal New Hope ones. They also have a small hole in them that makes for better mounting of the figures as I drill a small hole in the sole of the boot and insert a small piece of fuse wire to strengthen up the glue mounting joint.

Beautifully painted gloss figures. Thanks for posting.

Hi, Scott, your comment made me go back to Garratt's "World Encyclopedia of Model Soldiers" to refresh my memory. William Murray, who founded Old Guard, collaborated with David Winter from 1974 to 1976, to sell Old Guard's figures in the UK. In '76, Winter ended the joint project and formed New Hope Design. Both Murray and Winter, it appears, commissioned various artists to make figures for them, using their joint agency to market them on both sides of the Atlantic, giving exposure to artists in both markets to the other. Garratt notes that there is confusion about which Old Guard models originated in the US or in the UK. The Men at Arms series was solely a project of New Hope Models, though.

No matter how you slice it, though, those are some nice castings, and you've done a great job with them!

Prost!

G'day Scott, I have to say mate, well done. As a glossy painter I love the finish on them. Theres something about this kind of finish. I like all types of Toy soldier art but lean very heavily to gloss. A real credit to you. Cheers, Johno.{sm4}

Thanks for that info Brad. It helps to date the figures.

Johnno,

Glad you like them. I noticed those gloss figures of yours you posted the other day- nice!

Another Aussie as well.

That's yet another clear finish spray White Knight) that I have seen - that doesn't appear to be available in the UK - or France. I can't find it online Does anyone from the UK know of a British alternative that might approach the level of "shine" and depth that this product does?

I am still using brush on tinlets of Humbrol Gloss (no.35) - which is okay - but can't get amount of depth to it that Johnno does - which is just lovely to look at! :Djohnnybach

Hi Scott - yes - thanks for those two leads - I have had a good look at Halfords stuff before. I guess what it boils down to - is just trying different brands and see what happens. I have seen results of Krylon clear gloss (USA) and now White Knight (Australia) - and love what I see - BUT - can't get it in the UK or France - and they won't send International!

I have one model shop about half an hour away - but it's for train-set people - and can't get anything suitable there (just happy to get the dreaded tinlets and half-decent brushes). I'll be over in UK in July - so will just try different sprays - and hope for the best! What I'm after is clearly (sic) shown by this thread. That lovely deep glossy shine - yum! - you could almost eat it - couldn't you? I'll try to get someone from Halfords to give me a demo!!!

If I do find something similar - I will share the results - here! johnnybach^&grin

Have been putting this old kit of a Second Lieutenant London Scottish together lately and wasn't happy with his left hand as it is sculptured as though it is holding something. I thought of making a map to fit there but wasn't convinced.

I took some inspiration from my favourite Wilson Edward figure, the Light Horseman having a brew whilst leaning against the tree stump. I found an old 1/35 cup in the Dragon union infantry kit and fitted it up. I think it looks pretty good and will paint it up as an enamel type mug.

Looking forward to putting some paint on this figure. An amazing amount of detail on this figure that wasn't noticeable till the primer had dried, along with a few other faults revealed by the first primer coat.

Johnny B. - If you don't mind brushing on the clearcoat, you might want to try TAMIYA - CLEAR # X-22. Two coats of this clear acrylic produces ''that lovely deep glossy shine''. :)
Give it a try, you won't be sorry. And with Tamiya being a rather big hobby model company, their products shouldn't be too hard to find. The Tamiya - Clear X-22 is usually listed online with all their other acrylic hobby paint. - Ken

Another great casting, Scott! I like your modification for his hand, too, it's a perfect pose. I'm looking forward to seeing your progress on this one.

Prost!
