Some people have an inherent gift of having their ideas quickly recognized by others. There are also others who through study, practice and perseverance develop that capability. During my ‘professional’ career I had several ideas which I tried to advance without success, only to have someone else propose the same idea, and it came to fruition. I do know there is a fundamental principle here, and that is to develop the skill set that makes someone else think that it’s their original idea. That all being said, here is an idea for consideration that I believe got buried in the depths of another thread.

If the expressed interest of this Forum truly exists in a ‘boat’ let’s consider something within scale and not overwhelmingly expensive. Perhaps a WWII British (Australian) Cockleshell Canoe, with a single ‘commando’ in the canoe with a paddle or the IR receiver that was used to spot the mother submarine, and another 'commando' standing beside the canoe in full underwater kit holding a limpet charge, or silenced sten machine carbine. Certainly fits the COPPISTs just prior to D-Day, the Cockleshell Heroes raid up the Bordeaux River, and the British/Australian raids against Japanese shipping in Southeast Asia. The reference materials are out there which could insure absolute accuracy, and the total set should not be that expensive. W. Britains did it with a colorful plastic 2-man submarine (‘Chariot’ Mk I – Set 4302, repainted in attachment) and Airfix with a ‘Cockleshell’ within a plastic set of ‘Commandos’. Just a thought.

Several of us have expressed an interest in a British Commando range over the years, it would be good to have figures from the various raids they took part in. I asked Andy about it and he had considered it, who knows what the future will bring. I would think a canoe more likely as part of such a range as opposed to a one off .

Being in water, those guys must have had to get off the torpedo at a considerable distance not to killed by the pressure wave. Were they effective?

A very valid concern. During my 'professional' career, having worked in the analysis and design of both the Mk 46 and Mk 50 acoustic homing torpedoes and the Mk 17 nuclear depth charge (Mk 44 warhead), timing and reliability of fuzing were of utmost consideration.

With regard to operational effectiveness, In my opinion the single most definitive book on the subject is, CHARIOTS OF WAR, R.W. Hobson, Ulric Publishing, Church Stretton Shropshire, 2004, ISBN 0 9541997 1 5. The book addresses both the British and Italian development and employment of chariots.

Chariots were used in the unsuccessful attempt in October 1942 to sink the German battleship Tirpitz at anchor in Trondheim fjord (Asenfjord). British charioteers were successful in sinking the Italian heavy cruiser Bolzano (10,000 ton displ, 8 – 8in/54 cal. guns), at Bastia, Corsica, 22 June 1944. The Italians chariots were highly successful in attacks which sank both the British battleships HMS Queen Elizabeth and HMS Valiant in Alexandria harbour in December 1941.
