My Wittman Tiger display with the new add on crew set and a Knights Cross with Oakleaves, Swords, and Diamonds. Michael Wittman was one of 27 recipients of this very prestigious award. He was known as a chivalrous Tank Ace, allowing most crews of disabled vehicles to survive once he disabled their vehicle. On one occasion he engaged a Russian T-34 and it erupted on fire. He and his crew jumped out to assist the Russian tank crew whose clothes were on fire.

He dealt a great amount of misery to others until his time finally came....... Almost fitting his demise was the same as he had so many times inflicted !

It's Sunday, so maybe this is appropriate; "As ye sow, so shall ye reap." Now, just a little rivet counting, but Wittmann is spelled with two N's.^&grin -- Al

You are right.... "Wittmann" Thanks ! Breathing in too much propellant fumes from the 88MM shells is not good for ones thought process. I love the smell of gunpowder early in the morning !

I think its not gunpowder your sniffing!!!!! 20 smouldering vehicles indeed!!!

Thanks Notascoldasbastogne !!!! Just displaying a well made model of a well known Tiger Tank Commander. Part of the Mystique of WWII German Armor !!!

Interesting about them risking their lives to save russian tankers burning, I have read where they machine gunned russian tankers as they came from their tanks but, never stopping their tank and getting out in battle to save the enemy

I think, that was folly on their part or, some strange propaganda I could envisage it for Allied but, he was quoted on many occasions as stating he hated the russians. Probably would not have got his diamonds from Hitler had he kept aiding the enemy!!!!

The scenario was Wittmann had shot at the T-34 and set it ablaze. The Russian crew escaped the tank but were on fire. Wittman's crew were not in any enemy danger at the time and were in control of the battle. The logic behind assisting the Russians was that even though they were enemy combatants they were still armored crew men and Wittmann did not want to watch them burn to death. I don't think shooting their tank with his 88MM and causing them to be on fire was aiding them.Just an example of showing some form of humanity.Yes they did machine gun others, but a lone good deed stands as still being a good deed !!!
