THE EGYPTIAN WAR 1882

The Moonlight Charge at Kassassin Lock 28th August

General Graham had to secure the Lock and its precious contents – drinking water – without which Wolseley’s campaigns against Arabi Pasha had no hope of succeeding.

Graham was out-numbered five to one and was being hard pressed by the Egyptians. As darkness fell, the Household Cavalry including squadrons from the Horse Guards and the 1st Life Guards led by Lieutenant-General Sir Drury Curzon Drury-Lowe GCB (of AZW Battle of Ulundi fame) attacked by moonlight, the famous Moonlight Charge. The Egyptian Army fled the field.

The defence line in the pictures, is being held by Bedouin and Berber Arabs, allies of Arabi Pasha, they are
under the joint command of an Egyptian Officer and Berber Sheriff (Chief)

The successful charge opened the route to Tel EL-Kebir, more on that battle another day:wink2:

Beautiful figures, Martyn. Love the cavalry, as always, but I am really impressed with the Berbers. Quite colorful and action packed sculpting. -- Al

Set# EW1/V - Maj. Gen. DRURY-LOWE

Here is an account of the Battle of Tel El-Kebir

http://www.britishbattles.com/egypt-1882/tel-el-kebir-1882.htm

This is taken from the above

“Late on 24th August 1882 an Egyptian force, comprising guns and infantry, appeared to the North of General Graham’s position. General Graham engaged them. Seeing that the Egyptians’ flank was exposed, General Graham directed Major General Drury-Lowe to attack the Egyptians with the cavalry brigade.

Drury-Lowe lead forward his mounted force comprising a composite regiment of Household Cavalry (a squadron from each of 1st Life Guards, 2nd Life Guards and the Royal Horse Guards, the ‘Blues’) and 7th Dragoon Guards with 4 guns of N/A Battery, Royal Horse Artillery.

Drury-Lowe was aided in reaching the battle line by the gun flashes in the gathering darkness. The first fire was opened by the Egyptians. Drury-Lowe engaged them with his guns and then launched the Household Cavalry in a charge. The Egyptian infantry were swept away and their guns abandoned and captured in the ‘Moonlight Charge’ of the Battle of Kassassin”

Cheers

Martyn:)
