I assumed that you knew about another Memorial to the Australian Light Horse - on your home turf - in Tamworth Australia - which is a bit less lively, but is another beautiful sculpt of Soldier and horse. In case you don't ( and for others to see) here it is. jb

Thanks for the picture...much appreciated.........I am sure it will be enjoyed by all who see it. Tamworth is hill billy capital of Aust.....lot of small country towns in NSW and Vic have small ww1 monument to the fallen.... I presume the other states do as well....there is a beaut ALH monument at Albany...south of Perth....trouble is ...it is perched up too high to get a good look at... ...thanks again TomB

Thanks JB, despite it being nearly 1,000 km away from where I live I certainly do know about that statue as Tamworth is where the 12th/16th Hunter River Lancers is based. My Grandfather served in the 12th ALH regiment and The Hunter River Lancers now use their Black/Blue Unit Color Patch: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/12th/16th_Hunter_River_Lancers

Matt.....Sunshine coast... is that surfers P......used to drive up from Bris..through Tweed Hds...and scuba at Surfers when it was nothing but a small costal town....in the early 60'....... aint been back....TomB

There certainly is a beutiful Monument at Albany Tom - which does feature a member of the ALH as one of its two figures - though the other is of a member of the New Zealand Mounted Rifles - and features a VERY famous horse - and a has a lot of history behind it. I think this is the one you mean:
ANZACMemorialAlbany.jpg

Its correct title is, I think, The ANZAC Light horse Memorial - and is one of two in Australia (the other is in Canberra - I believe).

The original Memorial, however, was erected at Port Said Egypt much earlier, partly paid for by voluntary subscriptions from the men who fought (both NZ and Aussies) and both Governments - and was later destroyed by an Egyptian mob there in 1956 during the Suez crisis. Here's a pic of the original in Egypt - which shows the figures and horses off - a treat. Note the lower horse - which depicts Bess, a famous horse which it is said, was the only one returned to NZ after the War.

anzac_memorial-1.jpg

Literally torn and hacked to bits - the granite base was eventually returned to Australia ( with some of the bronze bits) and near-replica bronzes which were re-constructed, erected on it. The postition of the monument was never really suitable for NZ visitors - so the second one in Canberra was set up.

Contoversy also surrounded what was depicted there. The original featured Soldiers who were dismounting to fight on foot, as they were not really Cavalry at that time - but when the bronze was re-modelled, word spread that it depicted the ALH soldier coming to the aid of a wounded NZM horse/ rifleman. I think this caused a bit of disharmony between the two Nations - at the time. Hope its all resolved now - as it (they) are certainly lovely monuments - depicting very brave soldiers from both Nations. jb

JB...You certainly got that down pat mate....I have seen the Egyptian one somewhere...or maybe something like it...maybe at the War Museum in Canberra Aust...its was yrs ago...I dont really remember.....I think the one at Albany has three figures and is similar to the Egpy one...dont know,,,,I am not 80 ft tall......The Light horse ..to ...my knowledge...were mounted infantry....not cavalry...their purpose was to get to an area quickly...dismount and go into battle as normal infantry...at Bathsheba....the situation was desperate......they had to take the town quickly....horse's needed water badly...and many other reasons ......the aussie commander decieded to charge....it would have to be the only...... uncavalry......cavalry charge in history......previously the ALH had fought all their battles on foot.....the charge surprised the Turks and Germans and because of various reasons the ALH suffered only about 17 KIA.. and .many wounded that lived to fight another day,,,,,I believe that near the end of the war...one ALH unit was issued with swords....from what I have read....they made one other charge....it was at night and stuffed up...the ground was not suitable......anyway,,it scared the hell outa the Turks,,,,,end of novel,,,,thanks again for the pic's...Tomb......PS Aust and Turks fought together in Korea 1950 t0 53

You're very welcome Tom. The reason that I like Memorials like these - is that they frequently have absolutely fabulous LARGE metal soldiers on them. Just because they're bronze - doesn't mean you can't appreciate the artistry that is displayed! I just love the sculpts on many of them - and indeed, some of these sometimes find their way to smaller scales at some point in their lives - when they can be collected as TS. I often read about memorials like this - by using the Internet - which often just blows me away with the detail you can find.

I would certainly like 54mm castings of any (or all) of the ones seen here, so far. I note that you have been having a go at sculpting something like the figure on the Israeli memorial elsewhere on the Forum - and I do like what you have produced. Well done - do keep at it.:D jb

Tom, Surfers Paradise is part of the Gold Coast and is South of Brisbane. The Sunshine Coast (Caloundra, Maroochydore, Noosa) is about 90 Km North of Brisbane. I used to live on the Gold Coast back in the 90's but found it was getting to overcrowded and touristy. We moved to the Sunshine Coast in 2000 and find it a much more laid back life style up here compared to the Gold Coast, and far fewer overseas tourists.

Yes Tom - glad you found it - well worth a bit of time to study all of it

As for Suez - well - as history has panned out - and Egypt is now freeing itself from the military who freed it from Western interests - just makes me smile a bit! jb

Matt (Ozdigger) - you might like a look at this one - from the web-site below - which you need to look at in depth to find.

It's from the monument - which started this thread (I'm happy to say) - which shows how discussions like this often get back around to the initial post. Note the shoulder patch on this gorgeous sculpt - which you might enjoy too. jb

Thanks JB, but Howard would enjoy it more as the Light Blue/Dark Blue color patch belongs to the 4th ALH Regiment. The 12th ALH Regiment had Black/Dark Blue patches. Both of these regiments were at Beersheba and I have suggested to Andy that K & C release some figures with the Black/Dark Blue patches to represent the !2th ALH......which were the First to make it into Beersheba {sm3} No doubt Howard will correct me if I'm wrong :wink2:
