Hi Guys,

Just recently a wonderful new memorial was opened in the heart of London.

It was dedicated to the men of the Royal Air Force’s wartime Bomber Command” and commemorates the supreme sacrifice made by 56,000 British and Commonwealth aircrew during the aerial conflict over occupied Europe and Nazi Germany between 1939 and 1945.

For the RAF, at least from ’43-’45, the principal aircraft was the mighty AVRO LANCASTER. Over the years K&C has made several versions including this one… “Pistol Packin’ Mama”, one of my favourites. Here’s a three pix to share. All the best,
Andy C.

Great stuff Andy, just fantastic model and a real classic. Bomber Command did a wonderful job. I visited the new memorial on the morning of the last London show and it says on one of the inscriptions along the lines of ' If fighter Command saved Europe , Bomber Command gave us the power to hit back' . Thanks for posting mate.{bravo}}

If Andy doesn't mind, it seemed fitting to add these to his thread;

Nice bird !!! Good to see that by changing just a few figures and vehicles you get a completely different theme .This shows again the versatility of K&C figures and vehicles .

Stunning aircraft and, its stands as the best bomber from WWII and, a great memorial posted by Rob. Two perfect tributes to the bomber command force that took the fight to the heart of germany when everywhere the world shook against the german war machine.

It is a good idea Steve but being as the memorial is an open air memorial and not a museum we can only guess how long such a superb model would last before someone ' flew it away' !

Cheers mate

I would volunteer to take it down the next time I go to the capital!! Probably within the next twenty years or so!!

I fail to see how buying or manufacturing toy soliders is paying tribute to anyone.
It is a hobby for personal enjoyment or a business for financial advancement but it is not something that honors anyone's memory or sacrifice.
There are charities and foundations that do that by actively supporting various objectives ( care for veterans, builing new memorials, mantaining war graves).

Hey mate, (congrats on the Cricket by the way:wink2:) thing is if some think that by buying these and displaying them they are some how honouring the men who fought for us, is that doing any harm? I mean many think they are merely collecting TS's, but if someone builds an Omaha beach scene and says ' Its my little salute to them' where's the bad? They are happy, they are remembering in their own way, its easy for people to laugh at the suggestion but who are we to tell someone that no they are wrong and we are right? If someone says to me its how they remember then good luck to them I say, as long as they are remembering its all good mate. Some go to services, some travel the battlefields , some read books and if Joe Collector wants to remember by building a dio and displaying figures there's no harm at all. Thanks to the sacrifice of the greatest generation we all live pretty much free and have freedom of thought and speech.

In much the same way I've seen people buy what I may think is a total waste of money or of poor quality, but who am I to burst their bubble?

Cheers

I think what Damian is saying (and Andy also) is if you want to do something meaningful then give to an organization. No, there's no harm in making a little memorial in your house but it doesn't necessarily better the public memory or those who may have fought recently and need the financial assistance, whether directly, or through an organization.

I know that I started collecting Great War figures as a tribute to my Grandfather and Uncles who gave their lives for King and Empire as it was at that time, some fellow forum members who have been to my home can attest to the personal memorial I have created and it is gratifing to note that Andy and King and Country donate a small proportion of what we spend on their figures to veterans organizations.

Brad, no I certainly did not mean creating a dio is BETTER than donating to the servicemen and their relatives that depend on our help, what I meant is that if someone believes it is their way of honouring and remembering then that's just fine too.
