I purchased a DNA kit from Ancestory.com which should arrive at my house tomorrow.

Has anyone used one of these before? Or any other DNA test for that matter. I do not have much info at all about my family history or where my ancestors really came from, this should be interesting. No doubt I will end up collecting more TS lines based on what I find out :)

I got mine done through 23andme. Turns out that I found one two or three cousins with many near hits; moe importaant, no major health issues. Was surprised to find that I have a fairly pure ancestrial mix. All and all, it was both informative and interesting. I highly recommend writting a family history as best you can plus adding a detailled auto bio for future generations. To me, it is imortant that the younger members of the family know where they come from.

I have been a subscriber to Ancestry.Com for the past three years and really enjoy using it to research my wife's and my family trees. I find it top be very useful and am constantly amazed at what can be found on this site. I am planning to have my DNA tested through them as well, but I have not taken the time to do it yet . . . . just a matter of time. Its interesting for me to learn about history through the observations, involvement and lives of my ancesters . . . .

Kit arrived today. I did as instructed (which was spit in a tube) and I will mail it tomorrow. Two to three weeks for results. I will post the results, thanks for the input :)

Hope your not wanted for any crimes?:)

Yikes! LOL no I am good. Nothing in my background to worry about. Most they might find is some of that recreational drug use back in high school but that was a LONG time ago {sm3}

Did the test with 23andme and found interesting things from my mother's side and that I have 3.1% of Neanderthal DNA in mine (no wonder why I am spending so much time in my man cave!) In addition they give you a list of your health risks in percentage, so this is very interesting. Note that we guys can get our ancestry line from both mother and father through that test since we have XY chromosomes. Female are XX so the DNA test only give them their mother line ancestry. So it's better to do the test on boys instead of girls among siblings.

From my readings, we may have to add African troops to identify with our VERY distant ancestors. :wink2:

So the results are in.

They received my sample on Oct 28th, 5 days after I mailed it. The results hit my email today. Not a bad turn around.

Mostly European (95%)

Europe West 45% (Belgium, France, Germany, Netherlands, Switzerland, Luxembourg, Liechtenstein)

Ireland 18% (Ireland, Wales, Scotland)

Europe East 10% (Poland, Slovakia, Czech Republic, Austria, Russia, Hungary, Slovenia, Romania, Serbia, Ukraine, Belarus, Moldova, Lithuania, Latvia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia)

Italy/Greece 9%

Iberian Peninsula 7% (Spain, Portugal)

Trace Regions 6% (Finland/Northwest Russia 4%, Scandinavia 2% Great Britain 1%)

With some Asian (4%)

West Asia 4% (Caucasus 3% Near East 1%)

One percent Greek God I guess :)

Pretty interesting how they do the test, basically they run it 40 times for each match to determine a range and then work out a average of that range, that is the number listed above. They say the test goes back up to 1000 years. It also links you to distant relatives (3rd cousin on) from across the world that have done the DNA test, with a link to contact them thru Ancestory.com if you choose to. It even compares your number to the average resident of that area of the world. For example my 7% on the Iberian Peninsula compares to 51% for the "typical native" of that area. And the "typical native" in that area has a 69% Italy/Greece heritage to my 9%.

I do not have a lot of background info on my family history so this was informative for me. Was it worth $99? I think so. Now when I read a history book or watch a documentary I will be able to feel that much more connected to parts of that history.

I was kind wishing I was British royalty but at 1% I guess that is not gonna happen {sm4}

Sent my DNA test to Ancestry this past Tuesday. Looking forward to the results.

Nice, post them when you do :)

I received my DNA results back from Ancestry.com this afternoon. My DNA sample was compared to over 700,000 markers of DNA from all over the world. The results show that I am:

46% Western European (France, Germany)
22% British (England, Wales, Scotland)
21% Scandinavian (Norway, Sweden, Denamrk)
7% Irish
2% Italian/Greek
<1% Finnish/Northwestern Russian
<1% North African

I guess this explains why I don't tan . . . . :wink2:
:smile2: MIke

I got mine back also. Much as I expected, so
no surprises.

66% British (England, Wales, Scotland)
14% Western European (France, Germany, Switzerland)
10% Italy/Greece
9% Irish
<1% Scandinavia (Norway, Sweden, Denmark)

Interesting to note that the average Britain is 60%
British, so I'm 6% more British.
