In July 2010 Tradition of London retired this set which depicts the band of the 3rd regiment of Grenadiers à Pied or Dutch Grenadiers.

I was in London in June that year and so before the Toy Soldier show, I visited the now closed shop in Mayfair hoping to purchase the 30 figures, but they were packed for sale at the show on Saturday. Steve Hare said that if I wanted, I could collect them from the show, to which I agreed, and so on leaving the show, I had a bag full of these wonderful castings, as well as many other choice bits and pieces from other makers.

Another British collector friend, Paul, who knows that I was on the lookout for retired Tradition Napoleonic figure as kept and eagle eye out for others from this set over the past shows and recently I received an extra dozen of more so now the band will be more like 40 figures!!!!

Today I started the assembly and painting of the band, which I will continue to show off on this site over the rest of the year, as I'm sure it will take some time to completed.

I started with the 3 NCO's being the Drum Major, Drum Corporal and Band Master.

This is all of the packets laid out on the table.

I will keep updating this thread to show you how its progressing, so now on with the first 3....

Then its the Corps of Drums and Fifers in bearskins.......

John

Lovely project John - I'll look forward to your instalments - when your time permits, for a masterclass on painting a band!

Hi John,

The uniforms for them are simply gorgeous. I read that the Drum Major of the 3rd Imp Gd was very tall. Any thoughts on lengthening him?

Hi Victor,

the figure of the drum major is slightly taller that the band master, so in the next update, I'll post a front-on image,

John

Here is Wednesday's work.

and as you can see the Drum Major is a slightly bigger figure.

Final finish will be matte and most of the bigger painting is done, leaving the fine painting of silver on the first two and gold on the last one.

Sunday evening again, and here is the fruits of the week's labour :

band4.JPG

The next task will be the 5 x side drummers and the 3 x fifers in white coats a bearskins,

and after that on with the blue coats, but that's next month......

I use HUMBROL enamels for the colours but recently I have been very disappointed with their metallic, so I now use REVELLE for Gold and Silver.

Kind regards

Here we go ...

GOOD FRIDAY so time for a rest and finish off the next batch of troops for the band.

This time its the 5 side drummers in bearskins.

band5.JPG

They are led by the Drum Major, and within the front rank is the Drum Corporal.

Next will be the 3rd row, with 3 Flute players in bearskins to complete the first batch, as the rest of the band are in Sky Blue coats with Yellow Facings.

Hope you like them,

John

Like them very much John! {bravo}}

This week's work is the 3 Fifers, but in this image I have the Drum Corporal, leading his white coated Grenadiers, and not the Drum Major.

band9.JPG

Next lot will be the drummers and cymbalists but all now wearing the sky blue and yellow uniforms.

John

This is the first 3 bandsmen wearing the blue coat, yellow facing and busby hat.

The Jingling Johnny is wearing the standard uniform, while the Negro cymablists wear a stylised Ottoman Uniform, something popular after Napoleon's expedition in 1800 to Egypt.

Next will be the Bass and 2 x Side Drummers.

John

This will probably be the last 3 for a couple of months, while I'm on holidays in UK & Europe.

Its now taken me 4 months to add to the band .... that what happens when you are having 'fun' :)

The 4 new figures are 2 Fifiers and 2 Hornists.

bandhorn.JPG

Note that the horns are being played right and left handed !!!

The reason is the figure on the right is original, while the left hand figure has Dorset Soldiers arms and horn because I only got one horn figure, as they were about to be retired, but got an extra band master, and so swapped arms :)

About another 8 figures to go now ... Phew.

For the start of the New Year, I have completed the last 4 individual figures of the set.

bandlast4.jpg

This time its Bassoon, Serpent, Clarinet and Trombone.

I will be adding another 4 figures, with the same instruments to finally complete the 32 piece band.

I still have a few spares left, so it may get more, but here they are now, lined up and awaiting 4 more players.

Absolutely fabulous band John - which looks all the better for being BIGGER than the more usual dozen or so - that you get with most pre-painted bands. Yes - if you have a few extras - why not add them in - when you have time.

Liked the "Dorset to the Rescue" hornist, who is playing the horn by holding it the wrong way around. Such touches makes your band all the more "special" and different from most, once again. Good old Giles! ^&grin

Only goes to show, what you can do with a bunch of castings - and maybe the odd spare part - and in no small part - a splash or two of paint in a talented hand. Beautifully done:salute:: - jb

Thanks JB :)

I may also add a triangle player, using a spare bandmaster, should be easy using the same right hand with baton, and another arm holding a wire made triangle.

Keep watching this thread ....

John

Excellent work! What is the reason for the different uniforms for each section of the band?
Cheers,
Brendan
