Working On Roman Collection (1 Viewer)

Hi everyone.

I'm working on starting a small collection of Romans. Always loved the look and uniformity of them.

Was hoping to do a diorama and have a few ideas in mind.

I was looking for information on the 9th Legion in Britain. I love the story of how they just up and vanished in some stories.and was hoping to create a diorama representing an Ambush by Picts with the Conte roman sets.

Another idea is a scene like the first 20 minutes from Gladiator, except smaller and without the siege equipment.

I have picked up some sets (All Conte):

Roman cavalryman with spear on horse.
Roman cavalry with arrow in chest and 3x Barbarians on base set.
Behold the power of rome Barbarian with dead roman body and base.
Cause and effect roman soldier with spear through chest and barbarian.
Barbarians attacking four barbarian figures.

Are there any members who have a real interest in the roman wars and have some pics of their own dioramas that they could share?

I have a deep interest in the strategies, tactics, men and equipment. Right now all of my stuff is displayed as collections rather than true dioramas.

I think the movie Centurion provides some great scenes and diorama ideas. One thing to choose is which myth of the IXth? Disappearing in Briton, Caledonia (Scotland), Cappadocia (Turkey/Armenia) or Germania.

If you want to work into the King Arthur legend you probably move away from Imperial Romans and they start looking more like Anglo/Saxons.

I love the Collectors Showcase range and have virtually everything from it. It's set as Rome 43AD but it could easily be used as a Gallic or Boudicca set-up too (just need a Boudicca on another chariot!). Most of the Celts would work well as Picts too, so a beyond the Wall scenario is quite possible. I'm not sure how they'd look with Conte's old Barbarian line but I think they'd be ok size wise together?

There's a few other Legion destruction stories to tell too. the 21st 'Rapax' was wiped out by Sarmations (?) in the AD90s. The 12th lost its Eagle in one of the Jewish revolts and another (the 22nd?) was probably wiped out/disbanded following the 130AD casualties. I'd be very interested to see a Jewish/Zealot line to diorama these.

A Civil War option is also intriguing to me. Two Roman armies with a variety of auxillary forces: Numidians, archers etc. I wonder how they distinguished each other back in the day? Did different legions have different shields?

The IX legion was known as the Spanish Legion 1st cent BC to 120 AD when they dissapeared in Britain

In " Gladiator" we are circa 180 AD ( end of Marc Aurèle, begin of Commode )

Uniforms are completely different

Remember :
Roman Republic, followed by Roman Empire cover history from 600 BC to 500 AD, the extension of Roman Republic beginning only circa 300 BC

Unlike most film makers,(and southerners ) don't make the mistake of thinking Hadrian's wall is also the Scottish border. There's an English county north of "The Wall" called Northumberland !

You could also, when collecting, have a look at the figurines from " Forces of Valor" ( retired but some are still on the market)

Those were also sold under the BlueBox label, weren't they? In any case, you can also pick up BlueBox sets, too, to fill out any large scene. There are only two regular soldiers in each set, though. The other two figures are of Julius Caesar and a signifer.

Hi the Collector Showcase mounted romans I did not like, as soon as I got them, got rid of them, very disappointed on the scale of the horse
they looked like miniature ponies, the horses should have been nice and large like their celtic chariot horses, great poses terrible scale

Hopefully the next release if any on mounted figures will be better, conte is ok, same with First Legion and Russian made figures great scale

That's one of the problems with making ancient figures. The fact is that all horses at the time were what we now call ponies. So do you put figures on historically accurate mounts or put them on modern looking horses (as most do) ?

Living on the Tyne and Wear / Northumberland border, there have always been historical rumors of "swarthy "Northumbrian's who began populating villages during the early period of the "Dark Ages" this is usually associated with the remainders of the Ninth Legion personell who had many Spanish origin soldiers in their ranks. On the collapse of Roman authority, they merely discharged themselves and joined the local population. Up to date there has been no definative archaeological evidence of a major engagement that would be needed to destroy a formation like the Ninth Legion.

Although the archaeology in Northumberland has only really been along the wall and down the coast. As you know there's still a lot to dig up.
By the way it still bugs me that they took away Newcastle's status as a "City and County" in it's own right. Gateshead was a foreign land when I was a kid!

Who knows what may turn up in later digs. Quite right about "City and County". Much like our local Regiment (Royal Northumberland Fusiliers) I was serving in it when we were told about being sacked (amalgamated) But the good news was that it was apparently all for our own good, and that 300 years of history wasn't that important anyway{eek3}
