Oh yes! Fallschirmjager invade sleepy English village!

Great quote from IMDB

Kommandant Orlter, alias Major Hammond: [addressing the church's congregation]

Obey my order and you will not be harmed. Any person who attempts to escape or communicate with the outside world will be shot!
[shouting even louder]

Kommandant Orlter, alias Major Hammond:

Is that clear?

The Vicar: You ask me to bow down to the forces of evil here in this House of God?

Kommandant Orlter, alias Major Hammond: I ask nothing! I give you my orders!

The Vicar: I am a minister of the Christian faith. I will take no orders from those who are the enemies and oppressors of mankind!

:D Classic sunday Church conversation!.There is also (for the time)a fairly shocking scene in which an elderly lady throws salt in a Fallschirmjagers eyes,as he is recovering she picks up an axe and does him in.Stalwart British women showing true grit,we love it!

Went the day well is an all time classic British war movie along with "Green for Danger"! Going back to the comic theme imagine my horror during my very short army career being introduce in the time honoured fashion to my sargent whose name was Steel. If thats not a comic book hero name then what is!

Anyone remember the Ghost Tank series?

As I recall, the storey lines were always the same. Beleagured Allies on their last ammo and strength would be aghast to see an unearthly spectre, a Sherman tank flying Confederate colors that would roll in, slay all the enemy and then disappear.

Wierd, but great artwork and lost of those dramatic "Uuunnh!"s and "Aaaargh!"s spelled out like in the Batman comics.

Sgt. Rock and Easy Company - What a great comic !

Are there any WWII Period Comics being sold now?

I too learned my first German from the Sgt. Rock comics "Dumkoph Amerikana"
And don,t forget the adds on the back covers for something like 100 soldiers for .29 cents.
You would send away and they would be those completely flat plastic soldiers.
Couldn't imagine back then that I now would be paying $25 for just one soldier.

I know what you mean - can you ever think that age 13 that you would be buying Toy Soldiers at $200 and $300 orders at a pop ?

Oh the good ole days when SuperHero Surlppie Glasses were the rage...

Wasn't the tank possessed by the ghost of JEB Stuart?

Surprisingly yes in recent years Dc Comics and Marvel have produced quite a few war comics many of them written by a writer called Garth Ennis who was inspired by the British war comics of the 70's.

Here's a few titles that should be available in collected editions on Amazon. I've read them all and highly recommend them.

War Stories Volume 1 and 2. by Garth Ennis
A collection of 8 64 page stories featuring different war scenarios from the crew of a tiger tank on the Russian front to a doomed SAS patrol in the desert, a US airborne company in europe, a catapult pilot on the arctic convoys and the D-Day Dodgers in Italy. Really good stuff.

Battler Britton by Garth Ennis
Great series about the old British comic pilot hero Battler Britton fighting hotshot US pilots who think they know the lot and the Hun in the desert! Plus the Americans and the Brits put aside their differences to beat Jerry! Result! :)

Nick Fury: Peacemaker by Garth Ennis
worth getting just for the opening chapter that tell the story of Kasserine pass.
It contains the immortal line from a German General to a wounded Nick Fury

"It's not like fighting the French is it?"

There's a few more but those are my favourites :)

I just checked Amazon and there are new Comic Books coming out (2007) for the Haunted Tank and the Unknown Soldier - very cool - check it out on Amazon. :)

Tim, that web site brought back those memories of how disappointed we were when we finally got them. They really were bad.
I remember the one I ordered was Custer & Indians. .
It,s amazing that some survived this long.

I got sucked into the romans, but I had a lot of fun knocking them over with the supplied catapolt!:p

Speaking of comics, did any of you ever have Classics Illustrated when you were kids? Although I had Superman, etc., these were a great way to get interested in classic literature, plus my parents approved of them also :)

Here's a photo of one from ebay.

Hi Brad,

Oh, yes! I read almost all the Classics Illustrated when I was as kid. Loved 'em all!

Thanks for reminding me of them. I thought they were great!

Warmest personal regards,

Pat :)
