Portugal and Spain Tour (1 Viewer)

Oh my goodness Victor, Thank you for sharing your tour! This is so much to take in....the stunning murals and ceiling art in the artillery room, the statuette room, the glorious paintings throughout, the magnificent ornate room with helmet display, the miniatures built into furniture, the bronze sculpture, the royal coach, the uniforms, and the stunning castle on a rocky bluff....all so fascinating and beautiful!! What a treasure trove of timeless art and history. I can't wait to see the Catholic churches! It must have been very hard to walk away.

Thanks again,
Joe

Hi Joe,
You need to visit too. The pics can only convey so much. I'll include some Catholic church pics besides the military museums and castles.

Thanks for the photos.
I haven’t hit Spain yet, but have been to Portugal. They are some of the most friendly welcoming people I’ve ever encountered. The carriage museum is awesome!

Hi Zach,

Yes. Portugal is such a welcoming country for visitors! The food is terrific too! I posted some books on the coaches in another thread.
I also took in some Fado music - Typical Portuguese music where a singer stands up to sing Portuguese songs accompanied by a guitar and a Portuguese lute.

I visited the Portuguese National Tile Museum (Azulejo). Fantastic tiles in all shapes and colours.
All the pics of this place are in my wife's hp so here's a scanned copy of the handout and the website of the place which has great pics.

We used tripadvisor and visitacity websites to largely plan our trip. Hotel bookings were done thru Hotel.com.

Victor,

I haven’t been to Portugal since I was a student in 1986. I remember the people were wonderful and the country was beautiful. Thank you for the photos from your trip. The bring back good memories!

Now entering Spain. I took an overnight bus trip to Seville. Early in the morning, I took a walk along the river front to a great place Marques Paradas. Then discovered that there was a military museum at the back! These are the pics from that museum. These are random shots and unfortunately, there were no publications to be purchased.

As can be seen, it is quite a big place. Occupying 3 floors. This is the main hall.

There were many cases of toy soldiers. This was 1 case.

More shots of toy soldiers. I can recognise a few Airfix, Italeari figures in the background.

There were many glass cases of large tabletop architectural models and warfare. Most of the figures were about HO scale or 1/72.

I LOVE the pictures -- thank you for posting! Now I have to go there....

Then I wandered into this section. After a while, I realised the implication and decided to beat a hasty retreat from this museum.

Hello Brad,

Well that was the artillery shells, explosives and fuse section. I exited without too much fuse...ouch!

The Prado was much later in Madrid. Fantastic place! Definitely the greatest pure classical art collection in the world. I rushed around trying to see all the Goyas, Velasquez, etc that I could.

I found a cache of pics which were from this military museum.

More architectural models. These were of forts and outposts of the Spanish Empire.

The only place that tops the Prado is the Louvre.

I agree. The Louvre was much bigger and the collection more varied including the impressionists and other artworks like sculptures, historical artefacts etc. The Prado appears to be a smaller building and is focused solely on classical paintings.
