My Chaffee came today!!!!! (1 Viewer)

Just got done with the first look at the beastie after opening the box. Andy and the team have done a GREAT job on the M24 - absolute light years in advance of the old DD-series M24. I don't take a scale ruler to the tanks, but the form and proportions are right. Andy did some homework on this one - he used the appropriate WW2 steel tracks and omitted the extra steel "pads" that appear on many post-war Chaffees (and several plastic models) on the corners of the hull. The commander and driver both are depicted wearing their "tanker trouser" with the bib front over the tanker jacket, an arrangement seen in a number of WW2 photos. The TC has a 7th Armored Division patch. The US 7th Armored was the cornerstone unit of the defense of St. Vith - an action that totally frustrated 5th Panzer Army's timetable. The tank itself carries no unit markings (presumably covered with the whitewash).

A delightful tank to add to your collection. I know I usually nit-pick Andy's US tanks but I can't see any big problems on this one. Point and match to Andy Nielson!

I have to agree that this tank is terrific. It makes me want the olive green version even more. I also got the Elefant with the Chaffee and it sure is nice to see all that improved tread work, especially compared to what used to be the way that they sculpted them in the past. The tracks on both tanks is spot on, especially when modeling in polystone. I second your thanking Andy. Great couple of tanks and I am very happy to have them in my collection.

Based on the pics I'd say the olive green Chaffee is K & C's best tank to date, even better than the Hummel imo. It's so good I'm tempted to sway from my German armor only collecting plan

I gotta admit Michael- I am loving the irony here- you, a navyman getting jazzed up over tanks and me, a soldier, getting jazzed up over ships (see my Conte Roman War Galley thread). I think we slipped into Bizarro world or something.

How does the Ellie stack up with the Hummel- is it bigger and heavier??

The Elefant is a about 10 to 15% larger than the Hummel and it is lighter by a pound or two. If you have the DD27 and the DD45 or the DD65, there is a distinct weight difference between the Shermans. It is the same as with the Elefant and the Hummel. There must be different polystone formulas with different densities. The tracks and suspension system on the Elefant are detailed much better than the Hummel (which is still very good in its own right).

By-the-by, I still collect navy related material. Its just that even as a child I was obsessed by tanks and other military vehicles. I am resisting the temptation to collect aircraft. After all a man has to have limitations. Or so I am told by my family.

I saw the Elefant today. Very nice - the size is impressive, the track detail decent, the figures dynamic. Per its name the Elefant was not the most aesthetically pleasing of vehicles, but a good addition for the Eastern Front.
