Does anyone know what this ship is made of?? I cannot seem to get a straight answer- is it plastic or some kind of resin compound or wood??
Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Take care,
CC

Not Certain Chris, but I suspect it's the high density hard resin like the Viking dragonship. I eyeballed it a long time at otsn but like a good boy, I looked and didnt touch. Couldnt see a use for it in my own collection so never asked .It is amazing though!

Thanks FUB- I am trying to figure out if I want to kickoff 08 with adding that to my collection- what a TREMENDOUS hit to the Defense Budget- I am on an intel gathering mission to see what I can find out and, unfortunately, the information seems to be very limited. I have called his customer service line a couple times and they seem uncertain as well.

Fortunately, my wife has all purchases grounded for me so my 2008 won't begin until Feb 16th!!

Saw that you are coming to Gburg perhaps for the show- would love to meet you

Took the plunge!!!

Caesar's ride will be pulling up in landlocked Mechanicsburg Pa in 5-7 days!!!

of course, I guess he could just sail up the Susquehanna river :)

I'm sooooooo pumped!!! I have been saving since Thanksgiving for this thing and working overtime as well. I broke some single piece spending records in 2007- buying the KC Limited Edition Bulge Sherman and then the HB jagdpanther. This one, I am going into uncharted waters- but at least I'll have the Legions support.

The ship weighs 30 pounds for postage costs, which, for me, tacked on an additional $65

2008- THE YEAR OF THE ROMAN!!!

Good for you mate!
Shame you missed the wife imposed 16th Feb hold off date, but I'm sure the galley will be worth whatever she deems a suitable punishment for you. :p;)

It was the weirdest thing- I told her about the $100 discount if you buy early and she said "You cannot buy it BUT, if you talk someone into buying it FOR YOU then your in the clear" I was so confused I just stood up- rather than me physically writing out a check or calling to place the order, she required someone else to do it:confused:

So, what does a good Currahee trooper do when the chips are down?? Call DAD!! I called my dad and he squared me away.

I am still completely confused by her decision- I will probably only be able to open it for inspection when it comes in and then will have to package it up till the 16th:D

She did remind me subtly last night that we are suppossed to go out tomorrow night- she even cleared me for wargaming tonight!! She is setting me up- I know she is- I know she wants to go see that sappy love flick ATONEMENT but if all I have to do is sit through that for a couple hours, mission accomplished.

I'm sure it won't be that easy but hey.... I will look at the movie screen and see nothing but Roman War Galleys!! :D

In all truth and I told her this- if she hadn't pulled up the reigns, this would never have happened- that's how my best friend, my wife, looks out for me.

Pat-

thank you for the kind sentiments. I was telling my wife that the thing weighed in at 30 pounds for Shipping and handling. My eldest son piped up "Dad, that thing weighs more than Choo Choo (our 2 year old sons nickname- when he's not smashing Dad's toy soldiers, he's playing with Thomas and friends :)) I sat back and, you know what, he's RIGHT!! I had to take Choo Choo to the doctor yesterday cause he was sick and he weighed 29 pounds!!

If I took pictures of this thing, it would be ALL over the forum and I would be pretty obnoxious :D I may even just weld it to the hood of my trailbalzer as a hood ornament!!

Veni Vidi Vici!!

Hi Chris,

It is okay with me if pictures of your War Galley are all over the forum. :D However, even though I am a automobile enthusiast, I balk at the idea of using the Galley as a hood ornament.

Enjoy your purchase. It is a grand moment when you are able to add such a spectacular piece to your collection!

Warmest personal regards,

Pat ;)

chris, this may be a little off target, but have you checked out PLAYMOBIL. they have a roman series that even though they're kids toys are pretty authentic as far as armor, shields, weapons and they even have a galley... i've been collecting them for a while.... have a few legions, with auxilary troops... check them out, they're pretty cool..... andy

You too Andy eh? :D That's so cool there's another Playmobil Roman collector here! I have a bunch of playmobil from my childhood (Civil war!) but the new Roman stuff has really reignited my interest in the brand. In fact, I liked the Playmobil galley so much I got a second one on sale a couple of months ago, and opened it up the other night. To mix things up a bit, on one I have the sail without oars, rear canopy or eye sticker and the other I have the opposite combination. The former is Marc Anthony's ship and the latter is Cleopatra's (she's available as a single Playmobil special). I skipped the siege tower, catapult and colosseum but I have the rest of the sets, and multiples of the legionary army building set. I want to eventually build up to a whole century (80 men) with 20 auxiliarys as support, along with a commander's meeting and a little praetorian unit. Did you know you can order additional single figures (or individual parts) directly from playmobil shop-at-home? The only annoying thing is for some production reason they recently switched the shoulder epaulettes to painted versions so you never know which variant you'll get.

No Cursing anyone on my Threads Mr. Mike :p

Yeah, CS showed some pics- I think it might have been on the Canadian TS Forum of the Roman Playmobile ship. It is very cool. I didn't realize it had all of those additional pieces though- another added bonus.

You can't resist the dark side Michael... the toys beckon you... at about $3.50 a Roman you can get a whole little army for the price of two metal toy soldier sets. East of India is going to have its work cut out for it trying to compete with these little plastic smilie faced dudes. :D

Rumor has it that next year Playmobil will do an Egyptian theme. ;)

Well for you Chris ALEA IACTA EST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:D

Oh yes my young friend, the die has truly been cast!! :D:D

That would actually be a pretty cool dio to do- Caesar standing on the prow of this warship as he sails the Rubicon.

Take care bud!!

Chris-
That Roman Galley was one of the most impressive, but least discussed items from the Chicago show. Look forward to hearing a review.

You got it bud- I will hopefully have something to post when she docks here in Mechanicsburg.

CAESAR HAS LANDED!!

Will try to post pics this weekend. The box this thing came in is criminally huge. It is approximately 40 inches long by 30 inches wide!!! It's funny because on the top of the box is a piece of packing cardboard- it's big enough to create your own tower shield!! :D My two year old son Andrew can hide behind the box and we wouldn't even know he's there!!

I gotta wait till my wife gets home to open it- she wants to be here, rightfully so. I don't forsee myself getting much done this afternoon.

Hi Chris,

I think you are one lucky man! I can't wait to see the Galley! I am eagerly looking forward to seeing pictures of your latest treasure!

Warmest personal regards,

Pat :)
