Roman War Galley (2 Viewers)

But guys think of the price. At 500 USD a throw you could almost buy a whole warbird for that.:):)

I'm seriously, SERIOUSLY, thinking about acquiring the Swordfish now that I've seen it in person. Hmmm....

There is a book called "Greece and Rome at war" by a scholar called Connolly. I saw it in the library the other day. It is great with modern illustrations and original relics. It seems that there is quite a bit of controversy about the exact number and position of things on these galleys. I suppose its not like WWII where there are plenty of photographs showing the camo used by the "Elephants" at the Battle of The Bulge so it makes it a bit more open to interpretation.

:D:D Well, a lot of very exciting historical research has been performed on the biremes and triremes. There have been some pretty extensive studies performed but I agree for the most part, we are talking about civilizations that lived thousands of years ago and the historical records were just a wee bit biased. I do know that in Scandanavia, three Viking longships have been unearthed after burial for a millenia. These recoveries have been pretty intact so there is some very good historical reference for those ships.

The nice thing about ancient civilizations is that, for the most part, we can talk about them without people getting put off like we can with more recent events- even within the past century. I cannot see why there isn't more interest in Rome from a toy soldier standpoint- watch the first 15-20 minutes of Gladiator with the Ballistae volleys and the legions marching forward to face the "barbarians"- that was as intense as anything on Saving Private Ryan.

Good for you mate!
Shame you missed the wife imposed 16th Feb hold off date, but I'm sure the galley will be worth whatever she deems a suitable punishment for you. :p;)

Simon

HA!! Well, she cashed in today and yesterday!! I had to work in her daycare for four hours each day- I had to watch the "Afterschool" kids- the ones who go to school all day and then come to daycare till their parents get off work- could have been worse, guess I could have had the baby room. Still, you guys talk about labor conditions in China- I was on my feet all day, and since they were short staffed, couldn't get a bathroom break!!:eek:

I am sure there will be more punishment but yeah, it was worth it.

Chris

You should go and tape the sounds of the Roman Galley in the movie Ben Hur and then sit back turn on the sounds look at your boat - it would like you were there ! :D ;)

But, but, but, Ben Hur's ship got sunk Ron....:eek:
Don't think Chris would be too chuffed if the same fate befell his galley. Sounds like its his pride and joy. :):)

Roger that- at least this week it's my pride and joy ;)

BTW- I don't think this is that good a ship- it doesn't float!! :p

Guys

Chris has a house full of kids - believe me this ship is going to sink......bubble..bubble..crack...crack...

Oh the joys of Fatherhood :D

Well, we've made it a week tonight and no damage so that is a good sign. My experience shows that if a new high dollar item arrives in the house, chances are SIGNIFICANT that it will suffer some kind of damage within the first week- of course, the night isn't over yet either :eek:

Once that week passes, the odds go down.

Yes sir- she is cashing in already- as I mentioned a couple days ago- had to go in to her daycare on a "volunteer" basis- then, about 15 minutes ago, hit me up for $250 to payoff her WalMart bill!!:eek:

So far, I have had the ship a week and have had to volunteer 8 hours at her daycare center and pony up $250 for her walmart bill. Still, it's worth it.

I'm new hear, ( first post ). I just had the UPS guy deliver my Conte RWG, with painted crew. Man the box is the largest thing I ever had delivered. And I think I got it past the Wife, ( I don't hear any screams ) yet:D. It's now unopened in the basement, I'll wait for her to nap. I can't wait for what I'll see:eek:

IXEC,
Welcome to the forum!
Glad to hear it's not just me that has to play 'Intercept the Postman'.
From the pics that Chris has posted, it looks one fantastic piece. Hope you enjoy it, and look forward to your posting on the forum.

Thanks for the welcome, Simon.

I just got up from the basement, and all I can say is OMG:eek:.I had no idea of the size of this thing. The box is 40"L , 25"W, 17"D, it must weigh 45Lb+. I can't believe the luck of getting it by her unnoticed, and the Cog to!

The ship is 34"L, 9"W, and it was a bargain on sale for $550.00+$66.00 shipping, total $616.00. I would get a second if I could, it's that good. Maybe Rick will do Greek Galley down the road.

I didn't have time to see anything else, it would take all night.

Simon, how am I going to get it displayed in front of the lady?

I also collect diecast planes and 1/6 action figures, she hates them. Now I'm hooked on metal soldiers. Out with the 1/6th stuff. I did notice though, the ladies don't mind the historic stuff, as long as it's not to military, whatever that means. I think I'll, at the right time, put the Galley in the cabnet without the crew. Then wait for her to say, ' to bad it doesn't have little men on board, that would be cool ', I hope. I know, keep dreaming:rolleyes:.

Tell me about the COG ?

Does the K&C Crusaders go with it well? How does it look?

Wait until she goes out, set it up on the sideboard, and then plonk a new pair of shoes and / or handbag next to it. It may seem an obvious distraction technique, but I'd guess she'll not notice a 3 foot boat straight away.:p

IXEC, congratulations on the lift up from lurker to poster! Have fun with the RWG! It is a super looking piece!

You too Andy eh? :D That's so cool there's another Playmobil Roman collector here! I have a bunch of playmobil from my childhood (Civil war!) but the new Roman stuff has really reignited my interest in the brand. In fact, I liked the Playmobil galley so much I got a second one on sale a couple of months ago, and opened it up the other night. To mix things up a bit, on one I have the sail without oars, rear canopy or eye sticker and the other I have the opposite combination. The former is Marc Anthony's ship and the latter is Cleopatra's (she's available as a single Playmobil special). I skipped the siege tower, catapult and colosseum but I have the rest of the sets, and multiples of the legionary army building set. I want to eventually build up to a whole century (80 men) with 20 auxiliarys as support, along with a commander's meeting and a little praetorian unit. Did you know you can order additional single figures (or individual parts) directly from playmobil shop-at-home? The only annoying thing is for some production reason they recently switched the shoulder epaulettes to painted versions so you never know which variant you'll get.

I HATE YOU....Just spent over $100 on Roman war stuff, including Galley, Legionaires and Gauls....Am wondering if the Galley could be refitted and repainted for a 54mm soldier look.......NAH...Then you could not play with them.:DMichael
