Yep, it had to happen some time I suppose. Finally had a close look at those limited edition WWI British sets in the new catalog, and within approximately 10 minutes had caved on the early war offerings after all. I ordered up the first few of the 10-11 retired or current sets I feel I must have, including 2 of the British artillery teams (I wish, but just kidding).

The 'Great War' is probably the conflict I've read the most about...volumes and volumes...and as far as recommended reading for anyone interested in the origins and opening moves of the war would suggest The Guns of August by Barbara Tuchman (if you have not read it already of course).

So anyway, I'll have the early WWI Britains and eventually the late WWI Britains I was originally waiting for, and for that I am just thrilled. :cool:

Lets us know when you get them! So far I've been able to resit WW1(tempted by K&C Uhlans though:)) Hope these aren't as good as you say or I'm in major trouble!

BTY I thought Storm in Flanders by Winston Groom was pretty good WW1 book

I will let you know how they look when I get them. I agree about the book you mentioned...also great reading. I've always been very fascinated by this war in particular...I think b/c I grew up with an old framed print of a WWI trench scene in my boyhood bedroom, and b/c I inherited a Yank Brodie helmet from a great uncle also as a small boy. Have even done a bit of re-enacting the Great War, but not close enough to the 'venues' to participate regularly and have since sold all of my kit except an SMLE rifle and the old helmet.

Trip to Verdun as a kid got me interested in WWI. I always thought there were a lot of possibilities on the arty side of toy soldiers for this period with all the different seige guns, field pieces, etc. That might be the ticket, BOV, Battle of Verdun series!

Gotta go dig some mini trenches:D.
 
Yes, Verdun, the Somme, Vimy Ridge, Ypres Salient, etc...I hope the capable good folks at Britains really stick with the WWI range. I will collect it all.

Hi Guys,

Have to say I totally agree with you all that WWI is a very interesting conflict and I certainly hope to see a lot more coming down the road from our good friends at Britains. I would like to see some more Tanks of course and would also like to see them do some sets from the fighting in East Africa. They have covered that period a long time ago but some action sets would be quite interesting. The Germans and their Askaris and of course the Brits with South Africans and Indian Army troops would be quite alright by me. Maybe a sink the Konigsberg vignette. Ah the possibilities are endless.

As for a good book to dig into on the topic take a look at The Great War in Africa by Byron Farwell. If you are into Tanks and the origins of Tank Warfare in WWI take a look at J.F.C. Fullers books like Tanks in the Great War Another more recent author who has some interesting works on Tanks and their development is AJ Smithers, A New Excalibur. I hope we can discuss the war some more.

Well I would say that if the series continues you will more than likely be seeing some armoured vehicles eventually. In the meantime, have you looked at the tanks done so far by Old Northwest. I have considered buying the big British tank and also like the looks of the French Renault tank. I will personally concentrate more on infantry I think though...I have never been as enamored with the vehicles as with the men on the ground. Thanks for the references though, I will add those to my reading list. And by the way, yes I'd love to see more discussion of WWI related issues in general too.

Okay, first of all you can hardly beat the service offered by our hosts at Treefrog Treasures. Lightning fast shipping and good prices.

I received the first of my WWI items today and like them very much indeed. I have an early set of the advancing 'Old Contemptible' British infantry. Love the mustaches on these guys. Also now have a fine set of the advancing German 84th infantry. Next on the list is the Vickers machine gun vignette. I have a line on this set at a great price and hope to pick that up this weekend...weather permitting.

The 'Great War' has begun.

MD....I have the entire line of WW1 by Britains (under 1st Gear) and the sculpting, painting, and poses are wonderful. You will not be disappointed with any of them....Of course, the one piece I can't wait to arrive at my door is the British Field Artillery w/Limber that is due out at any time...seems like I have had this pre-ordered forever now...Looking forward to seeing what other sets Ken and friends have up thier sleeves...:)
 
My dad has a lot of Britains Premier glossy WW1 sets and from what I have seen in the catalogues, Britain's matte line is continuing this wonderful tradition of quality in proud form.

I noticed that Builtrite had posted. When he first joined, he posted photos of his wonderful collection. Not sure you saw them but you might want to check them out.

Oh, lucky man...getting the Artillery Limber set. That is going to be very exciting to unpack and set up I should think. Are you exclusively collecting WWI these days? As I stated before, and partly for financial reasons, I was sort of waiting for the later war releases but as these get better and better I just could not resist any longer. I agree that the detail is excellent as is typical of Britains products these days. The puttees and P08 gear on the British figures is really nice and the poses are fairly exciting which I also like a lot. I have decided on several current and retired sets from the British and German lines and will get the new British sets as they arrive this Spring. I will definitely keep current on the WWI line in future. Unfortunately no artillery limber for me (it's either that or the Rorke's Drift Hospital piece and the Hougomont gate piece and I simply cannot do without those).

Those Biggs premier sets seem to be quite desirable now. At one time, I was considering starting in on those and then Britains and ONWTC started producing the matte lines and I figured I'd hold off. At the time I was exclusively collecting glossy and pre 20th century. It seemed logical to me to consider matte figures for WWI since it would have been such a muddy and dingy looking conflict. Ideally I guess I'd have both, but one never knows what the future may hold, eh?

Hi There! I thought you might like to know that the reason for the delay in the British artillery set is that we improved the design before going ahead with production. This included creating a new base that would hold all six horses after watching folks in the office trying to hook everything up correctly. We also added a third rider so there is a total of 5 men, 6 horses, the gun and limber. I have a preproduction sample here and I sure like it, even with the earlier problems! This has been a co operative effort to bring this to market and a s a result there were a few wrinkles to work out. In the end I think you will like it as much as I do. There will be a very limited run of this set so if you think you might want it you should contact your dealer to place a pre order soon.

Good to know you guys tested your product before releasing it. I've bought gosh knows how many products, both toy soldiers and otherwise, where clearly they never stopped to think if it was actually possible for the consumer to get it out of the packaging and/or assemble it without breaking it or hurting themselves in the process. My most recent 1/32 scale nightmare was trying to unscrew the plastic packaging off the bottom of a Forces of Valor halftrack. Nice vehicle otherwise, though.

Is it one big base with all the horse attached or ar the horse on bases that fit into another base ?

It's a shame these folks weren't around when the Irish State Coach was designed as I damaged mine assembling it :mad:
