Pretty cool they are getting Kennedy Center honors, they truly are American Icons and while they are healthy, nice to see them recognized. They changed the production of rock concerts for sure, introduced theater and larger than life concepts to a show. They may have never or will ever be the most creative musicians, but they had their formula down to a science and a testament to them is the fact that they literally sold out every show they did for 50 years. Not many bands can say that.

I always associate KISS with the 70s and 80s. Good times. Some great tunes and they always put on a show. I saw them a couple of times and my ears are still ringing.

Tom:

Great post, great band.

KISS changed marketing for musicians, songwriters and performers.

They were the first band to expand beyond concert t-shirts. They slapped their name on everything, lunchboxes, pinball machines and everything in between.

Kiss was the 1st rock concert I attended. I was 15 and it was at the old Chicago Stadium in 1977. The 70's was a great time to be teenager.

very true. They paved the way for many in this regard, I look at Iron Maiden and they actually IMO took Kiss's lead and surpassed it. Maiden even got their own stamps and coin sets in the UK (From the Royal Mint!).

On a side note, now that Ozzy has passed, I wonder how many tribute marketing larks we will see. I would imagine Sharon has through his estate the same lockdown on his image, rights, etc. but we shall see. I read recently where he/she refused to sell his music catalog like others and decided to keep it as a revenue stream for his children.

I think she was the business brain behind him. Very savvy and a mind for squeezing every $ and £ out of what they had/have.

After David Bowie died, they began to sell all manner of junk with his image and name on it. I think this is all authorized by his estate but it is embarrassing to see that level of exploitation. How much money do some folks need?

Agree, same with Elvis, but the more you have the more you want, grasping and grasping. The more i think about money the more i believe that whichever God you believe, in he/she hates money, just looking who they give it too.

Not just singers, noticed the trend in authors to suck money out that cashcow, as publishers churn out new books using characters from dead authors, such as Tom Clancy and Vince Flynn, with new writers, but the name blazened across the cover is the original dead author's. Mentioned those 2 as they are a couple of my favourite thriller writers.

I don't necessarily begrudge anyone from making lots of money. Certain artists like Kiss were marketing geniuses and never portrayed themselves in way other than to put on a show. They didn't pretend to be anything that they were not. The reputations of other artists, however, is harmed by turning their artistic legacy into a shambles by putting their image on a bunch of junk made in China after their deaths. It seems cheap and exploitive.
