This is one of the best WWII Marine pictures ever made, the cast is top flight. Although the island is never stated, I believe it is a take of the invasion of Saipan.

I would like to second this on two items:
Vietnam Marines armed with M-14 rifles which were standard issue until 1968, but kept being used all the way thru the war and still active today.
