Hi Guys,
It’s not often that toy soldier makers get the opportunity to see their “creations” produced in much larger, actual life-size!
But that’s what happened in Hong Kong’s Pacific Place Shopping Mall this Festive season...
As some of you know Pacific Place is the home to King & Country’s “Flagship Store” and one of Hong Kong’s most prestigious shopping centres. With no less than four 5 star hotels up above it alongwith office complexes for some of the city’s top companies it’s a major destination in itself.
Every year Pacific Place decorates the Mall with a specially – designed “Christmas” theme that attracts shoppers and visitors from not only Hong Kong but from all over Asia. Earlier this year K&C presented our new “World of Dickens” series and suggested that a 1:1 scale adaptation of the figures and buildings could be created in the display areas of Pacific Place for the Christmas season. Both Helen, our Managing Director and yours truly actually showed drawings and models of what could be built to the Mall’s own “Events and Promotion Team” back in June of this year. Fortunately for us they really liked the idea and a few weeks later detailed designs, cost estimates and building schedules began to be worked out with various contractors.
After I got back from the States in October several journeys were made into China to see the factories where the buildings and life size figures were being built.
It really was amazing to see our little 1:30 scale shops and houses being recreated and now towering 30 feet above you! A range of 12 life size figures were also built in fiber glass and then individually hand-painted to help “populate” this new “Dickens Village”.
A nice additional touch was to have actual stores where visitors could see and buy what was on display. I’m delighted to say there’s even a small Victorian toy shop among the Chocolate and Book Shops!!!
Anyway here’s a little taste of what you can see if you happen to visit Pacific Place this Christmas...Hope you like it. Very best Christmas wishes to one and all,
