12th Century Holy Land; A New Crusader Diorama (1 Viewer)

You are turning into a real pro at this Mike. I think I need a trip to Michael's for this celluclay stuff for my Zulu dio.

Thanks for the pictures.

What I have been able to work on has dried nicely. I have been able to paint the base edges that are finished black. I like to use black paint for this because I think it really shows off the landscape contour. Still waiting on the Caravansary Wall set I bought off of eBay just before Christmas. Hoping it will get here today so I can finish the right rear corner of the diorama. In the meantime, I have been using my imagination and my Crusader figures with the areas that are finished. Enjoy the pics - Mike

Ran some errands with my wife. Stopped at Michael's Craft store while out and picked up some self adhesive felt pads which I have placed on the bottom of the base. Also got two sheets of 3/16" foam board that was sky blue in color. I'll use these as a "quick & easy" sky line backdrop when the diorama is finished. Here's a picture of how it will look -

Really nice display. Your detailled explanations make that look so easy...when there is a lot of craftmanship needed.
Thanks,
Michel

Enjoyed watching you creating and bringing your diorama to life Mike thanks for the time an effort you spent in sharing it with us. What's next?....The Lt.

The Caravansary Wall set I need to finish off the back right corner didn't get here yesterday, perhaps in tomorrow's mail. I did want to take the time to express my appreciation for all the kind and supportive replies this thread has gotten from forum members. This whole process has been an enjoyment for me and I am very happy that this forum gives us the ability to share our hobby with other members.

The Lt. wants to know what's next. Sitting next to me is Pegaso metal kit #54-117, a Hospitlar Knight of the St. John Order (thanks again Mark for the gift). I have it cleaned and primed. Will start painting it this coming week. I am planning on painting him as a Templar though. This will be my first figure kit, so I am a little aprehensive on how the results will be. I will share the pics when its finished.

Anyway, hopefully I can finish the dio in the next coming days. More pics to come . . .

Received notification today that the Dept. 56 Wall set that I have been waiting on wasn't shipped until today. Disappointing since I bought it on 12/21. I won't be able to finish this dio now until this weekend or early next week. In the meantime I have decided to move it to the top of my entertainment center until I can finish it. This will be its permanent home when done. Took some pics of it - listed below.

I am still learning how to use Photobucket. While creating a separate album for this dio I edited and erased some pictures I used in some previous posts on this thread. Oops! They're gone :( Oh well -lesson learned.

I am going to keep the figures loose so I can change them around, add more, etc as my mood suits. I am also thinking about using this dio for a SAS or a LRDG dio. I told myself not to get into any other ranges but my evil twin is trying to convince me otherwise. SAS/LRDG/DAK - When it comes to WWII history I have always been more interested in the African Campaign than any other. I suppose I could call them 20th Century Crusaders :p:D

Mike,

I always thoroughly enjoy viewing your excellent crusades diorama photos and I appreciate all of the "how to" information you include, regardidng landscape, etc. My own large crusades diorama is continually progressing, although rather slowly, and I should have photos up withing a few weeks.

I too have always been extremely interested in the African theater of WWII. Many years ago, I had a nice collection of Tamiya models that I built of various German Africa Corps desert vehicles, including tanks, etc., all painted the yellow ochre color, with the desert insignias, etc. I also had German troops to go with them. That was a generation ago. I now have no idea what ever happened to any of it. Now, with the recently introduced, incredibly realistic crusades lines that are available, I've rediscovered the fun of collecting and the pieces come already finished, (better than I could ever have painted them myself). It's better than ever! I'll be looking forward to seeing posts of anyting you might put togehter from WWII African theater theme.

Really nice work Mike, very nice. I'm still plodding along. I made a wooden castle, didn't like it, so I made another castle out of polystyrene. I'm going to work on finishing them today along with molding some rocks and maybe starting on a base, if I'm not too distracted by college football.

Really enjoy your detail, enjoyed the conversation via phone, hope the weather lets up, Happy New Year and keep playing, Michael

Well its finished :) The Caravansary Wall set I was waiting on arrived yesterday. Set them in place and "puttied" them in with CelluClay and finished the area off with a little dusting of sand, kitty litter, and foam turf. Everything dried overnight nicely. Finished painting the base edge black and affixed the sky-blue foamboard to the back with 7/8" brads. I am very pleased with the results and really like how the K&C figures display with the Dept. 56 structures. Here are some piccs:

Mike, you're a connoisseur of diorama making for this period. Again, its always thoroughly enjoyable to watch, and appreciate your work.

:D

Very nice indeed! I ordered some walls and towers from JG miniatures and looking forward to starting my Crusader diorama soon. :)
