Today is the 140th Anniversary of the battle of Isandlwana and the Defence of the mission station at Rorke’s Drift.
I have posted several of these pictures before but thought I would post them today in a comic book effect. This format was introduced to me by Joe Quintini (The Lt) who sadly passed away back in December 2013 and I would like to dedicate this series of pictures to my mate Joe.

Lord Chelmsford looks across the river at Zululand

The camp at Isandlwana

That noise sounds like a train….but there are no trains in Zululand !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The camp is over run very quickly

Ammunition is low and drummer boys try to get fresh supplies to the beleaguered troops in the line

But Quartermaster Edward Bloomfield refuses ammo to the Natal Native Horse telling them to collect their ammo from their own supplies

Lieutenant-Colonel Anthony William Durnford and his Natal Native Horse are overrun

Finally an attempt is made to save the Colours

A few survivors reach the Tugela river and some manage to cross

A very short time after the massacre at Isandlwana the Mission Station at Rorke’s Drift is under heavy attack by the Zulu reserves commanded by Prince Dabulamanzi, these Zulus never took part in the battle at Isandlwana and are fresh from battle

Some survivors of the burning hospital are bought to safety and treated for their wounds

Supplies of water and ammunition are running low and carefully rationed

A picked group of the best bayonet men are formed to fill any gaps at the newly built biscuit box wall

Finally a mealy bag redoubt is built

As darkness falls the Zulu have withdrawn except for the odd sniping through the night all remains relatively quiet

Shortly after dawn breaks the Zulu have with drawn and it is not long before Lord Chelmsford arrives and is very relieved to find the Station has held

Martyn, terrifically told and well directed. Lots of action shown very well. Thanks for doing it. I’m sure Len and the Lieutenant would have loved it.

Martyn, I couldn't agree more with Brad. {bravo}}

Can't believe Joe has been gone over five years - his Britain's Zulu War thread was one of the highlights of the forum.

An excellent round of photos Martyn. I am sure Papa Zulu would approve. He was a big influence in my Zulu collecting and surely is missed.

Agree Martyn a fine tribute to Joe, the master of the "ZULU" diorama's. The Rorke's Drift aspect would have been a whole lot different if the 150 defenders did not have access to the entire supply of ammunition for the forward column, having used 19,000 rounds of the total stock of 20,000. A few more hours of battle was all the Zulu needed to deplete and over run the mission station.
Really like your comic version, you have every piece to tell the story on that momentous day.
:salute::Robin.

Well done Martyn, an excellent tribute to one the forum's finest ….. I'm sure The Lt. would be quite pleased.

B. :salute::
