1st King & Country Dinner Event in Singapore on June 27th 2014 (1 Viewer)

Thanks for the pic's and info Chris and if this is going to be an annual dinner event then I might pop over from Darwin and attend next year. We get some really cheap airfares from Darwin to Singapore and the lion city is one of my favourite destinations.

As for the possible future releases, it's interesting to see a 88mm in the mix as I thought Andy had ruled out making another one of these. I guess it's another case of "never say never" huh!! I like that bren gun on the tripod as well and I hope it's released sometime in the future with an 8th Army crew.

Tom

Tom:

I have to agree on the bren gun, that does look fantastic.

Hi Tom,

There was almost an unanimous show of hands for the 88mm when Andy asked the audience as to who will buy it. (I hope Helen recorded this on camera) So, the question next from Andy, was more of "do you want it towed by a prime mover or in firing position?" Andy was more particular that this time, if released, it must ship well with no breakage. An AK fan requested and Andy resounded that a desert version is very likely as well. How do I read it? The 88mm is a very high possibility versus an impossible Wirbelwind, and the reason was it is at least possible to finally ship an 88mm intact to us.

Rgds,Chris

Hi Brad, Schindler figure is a future release. There were no special figures for the occasion as I guess we are a smaller collector community compared to the rest of the world. The door gift and prizes are still available on the catalogue, except for a limited series HK Tramcar (the first 48pc limited run). Rgds,Chris

Thanks Chris.

Andy and Helen will be at the shop today at 2pm (Jun 28th) in case there are people who would like to come down and if there are any friends from Malaysia who would like to drop by.

I will just put in what I captured as it is late over in Singapore now, but much more were discussed. If I captured it wrong, I apologize. Anyone else who attended that would like to add to the list are certainly welcome.

Mike

Wit all the excitement and all, I may be mistaken .. but I believe you will see these in K&C's next week dispatches.

Hi Wayne,

Just to kinda correct it a little so that I do not get our hopes too high up on the Stuka. It was the first question posted during Q&A. The Stuka (if it can be shipped in one piece) is the major huge issue. Andy hilited that it fails box drop test every time, is almost twice the size of some of the other planes, polystone does not hold up too well on a bigger frame, will cost quite a bit the way they make it. So, this kinda suggests the prototype may exist but is prohibitive to see production. And we can sense Andy hearing intently wrt our feedback of our grouses wrt the competitor version, about it being flimsy, about some of its wing structure delineating. Just did not want to mis represent. But Andy knows we all love the Stuka. Just want to tell it the way it is, that's why I call it "still cooking" ideas, I guess. Sorry once again if I misrepresented.

Rgds,Chris

Hi Gents and Ladies,

Thank you for the report! Too bad on the Korean War. I think the "Chosin Few" would be a hit, but what do I know. However, love the idea of a Japanese Zero...Maybe "Yamamoto's Last Flight" would be a seller?

Wittmann in an SPG. That's interesting. He commanded one of the new Stug III Ausf A in the invasion of Poland. Then an SPG in the Battle of France in 1940 followed by the invasion of Greece and then Barbarossa. He took officer training and commanded a Pz. III before getting a Tiger. So there are lots of possibilities.

Terry

I'm hoping for a Wittmann Stug III as well. One thing though Terry, Wittmann did not command a Stug III in Poland or France. He was commanding a Sd. Kfz. 222 as part of recon during these battles. He did not command a Stug III Ausf A until the Greek campaign and on into Russia. He trained on the new Stug III at Metz France but his first action on it was in the Greek campaign.

Thanks very much to Chris for his concise report posted in quick time. It was a very enjoyable and interesting evening. I was very happy to have had the opportunity to meet Andy and Helen for the first time. Although I have read many reports of Andy’s talks and Q&A sessions at OTSN Chicago and the Westcoaster on this forum, there is nothing like hearing from him in person.

I would like to say a very big thank you to Andy and Helen for including Singapore in their busy schedule and hope this will be an annual event. Also, many thanks to Mike Tong and Daniel Teo of our local store, The Soldier’s Story for their hard work in organising the dinner event which was enthusiastically attended by both local and regional collectors.

The Q&A session ran for about 2 hours and was a valuable interaction for all. There was a good range of ideas and suggestions put to Andy and most have been listed by Chris in Post #5. I am adding a couple that I like, but are not listed:

Band of Brothers personality figures – e.g. Dick Winters, Bill Guarnere et al

Battle of Hong Kong – Chinese volunteers

Streets of Old Hong Kong – rickshaws with a variety of passengers

I had a good close up look at the new 1939 Bedford Fire Engine and it is really nice set. It would be a great addition to a London 1940 Blitz diorama. I was initially stumped by the duplex figure. Then someone hinted "Liam Neeson, Ben Kingsley and Ralph Fiennes".

Raymond.

Also, The Stug III was not operational during the invasion of Poland and was not first used until the Battle of France (but not by Wittmann in that battle as he first trained on it after the battle of France was over)

I'm looking forward to getting the new Walmington on Sea building for my RAF collection, maybe even some of the new Knights as well. Always lots of great stuff coming from K&C.

Great to see a dinner in The Lion City.

If I wasn't at the London Show earlier this month, I could have flown up to S'pore as its closer than going to see Brett in Queensland and warmer than Melbourne, and a cheaper flight.
