The campaign began on 24 June 1812, when Napoleon's forces crossed the Neman River.

This ended in the infamous "Retreat from Moscow" and of an original force of 615,000, only 110,000 frost-bitten and half starved survivors stumbled back into France.

I have painted a couple of sets of figures by Tradition of London,

The Retreat

The Rearguard

and still have castings for the 3rd set, 'The Burning of the Eagles"

and they will be my task for next couple of months in tribute to those lost souls, 200 years ago.

And 200th anniversary of Borrodino comming up in September,
My 2nd favourite Napoleonic battle.
Rob.

Bone up on your Russian Search words. The Russians like to take pictures of the reenacted battles and post them on line.

Here we go, the first of a set of about 20 figures by Tradition of London

The Burning of the Eagles 1812

burn1.JPG

L-R Dragoon Sappeur, Line Infantry Sappeur, Light Infantry Caribineer (supervisor) and Sappeur of the Imperial Guard collecting wood and getting the fire started

Interesting is that the name "CATON" appears on the bases of these figures, well done Trooper !!!

The extra wood is from my garden :)

More to come in a few weeks.

These are great figures indeed. I have all of the Tradition Chistmas Sets of Napoleon leaving Russia. They are in the front row with white bases. Just love them!!

My goodness - Obee's even growing the wood in his garden to 54mm scale!!:D

You don't have a 54mm Chain-saw do you John?^&grin

Nice touches though John - lovely figures indeed from Tradition of London - and beautifully painted, as usual. jb

Ludwig,

keep watching this post as I add the other 16 figures. I'm planning on doing them in batches of about 4 at a time, and then posing them as I go on.

Of course the diorama base will beed to be expanded, this first one was a trial to see how it looked, and from the feedback, I'm sure it will be fine.

Regards,

John

Johnny,

as well a 54mm scale wood, I've even managed to grow it at 1:1 scale :)

And I don't use a chain saw,

I'm like the Sappeur,

I use COLD HARD STEEL....... a #23 scalpel :) :)

Keep a lookout for the next 4 figures, later this month?

Looks great John. Love to see someone doing a diorama with these. I love my Traditions Napoleonic. So classic gloss. I like the fact that these were bigger setting them apart from the 54mm.

Go for it...I will be watching!!

The next 3 figures are getting thier 'lick of paint' this week, so here is a progress image:

next3.JPG

L - R Wurttemberg Chevauleger, Saxon Leib-Kurassier (drinking Russian Vodka ???) and Hesse Darmstadt Chevauleger (smoking his pipe)

Hopefully completed this week :)

John

The next 3 figures are now completed, and posed below with the Caribinier of the Light Infantry ( from the 1st 4 figures)

burn2.JPG

Seems like these 4 are posed to keep warm around the fire, while the Saxon tries some Russian Vodka, to warm himself... or maybe its Cognac looted from a Frenchman????

Next I'll sart on the Eagle bearers, who are waiting for the Sappeurs to build the fire....

John

JB,

not sure abouth the matches, but a 'wee bit' of image work, makes it look much more realistic....

burn2b.JPG

Looks like a RUSSIAN Winter now ..burr......freezing..... bring on the matches or more Vodka?

John

Finally the Eagles have arrived to await thier firey fate.....

4eagles.JPG

3 line infantry and one from the Chasseur a Cheval

3 more Eagles to come next, before the command group and finally the Marshals and Napoleon.
