I was not originally planning on attending this year's show; six months ago, we had signed up and paid for a "Finland, Russia, and the Baltic States" tour that was scheduled for the same time frame. However, last week, I was filling out our visa applications for Russia and Belarus and realized they would cost us about $1,000 which I could lose if Russia retaliated by imposing travel or visa restrictions on Americans over the Ukraine. So, I cancelled that tour and signed up for "Scenic Scandinavia and its Fjords" in July instead. That freed up that weekend.

I also talked my wife, Jean, in going with me to San Antonio even though she couldn't care less about toy soldiers. She was looking forward to seeing the River Walk, the Alamo, and the Menger Hotel again after more than 20 years. This will be my first time attending this show. I am looking forward to it.

just booked my room for Fri/Sat...

great deal brokered by KingsX for us again...

$125.00...tax included...

newly remodeled room with a king bed...
free valet parking (regularly $28.00 per day)...
complimentary breakfast buffet for double occupancy (2 max)...

it's gonna be fun...

I love San Antonio...about 3 1/2 hours from my house...a very pleasant drive...

Joel's BBQ is in Flatonio on the way there...on I-10 about 50 miles out of San Antonio...a tradition to stop there for some good BBQ...

I will go to my favorite restaurants...Mi Tierra...La Margarita...I'm ready for some great Mexican cuisine...

may go to the Briscoe museum again and see K&C's enomrous Alamo diorama...

drink some Margaritas...drink some John Jameson...walk the River...go to the Mercado...so much to do after the show is over...

I can't wait...

take advantage of the breakfast buffet if you stay at the Menger...it will knock you out...

Mike:

If you are up for a short drive (about 20 minutes from the Menger) I also highly recommend Rudy's BBQ. It is phenomenal.

True that on Rudys, every trip to San Antonio, I seek one out! Hole in the wall literally, but probably the best BBQ I have ever had.

I goggled Rudy's and I think I found it as "Two Brothers BBQ" on West Avenue. We will definitely try it out. If that isn't the same place, let me know.

Probably won't make it to the show this year, but I had a blast last year. The King and Country dinner was the highlight of the show for me.Chicago is a bigger show, but this show has a much cooler environment and feel to it.Hopefully I can make it next year.Hope you all have a blast at the show. Please take lots of pictures!!!

The first time my wife took me to Rudy's I was shocked when we pulled up to it, it is the definition of "hole in the wall." I pulled her card and told her she was lying about it being the best. I had to eat my words on that one.

I just got back to San Antonio this afternoon. I think some Rudy's while I watch the NCAA's tomorrow is in order!

Some photos from the last 2 shows. Many collectors show up in Historic attire which makes things that much more fun !

Jason,
you lucky guy! Can you mail order a platter up to Baltimore? 1/4 pound of brisket, and a hot link!

Tom

Mike...here's a link to the closest one to San Antonio...23 miles up I-10...it's the opposite direction of my house...and I now realize that I have eaten at the one in Houston before...it's very good...but I'll probably stick with Joels in Flatonia...it's a tradition for me...

Thanks Mike. I checked out how to get there from the airport. We may go there to eat even before checking in at the hotel.

Tom:

I just got back from there and this was my exact order! Even if you are full after the 1/4 pound of brisket you can always find a little more room for the link. Now my whole house smells like Rudy's BBQ meanin there is no way I will be able to hide the fact that I ate Rudy's from my wife. Some how I can always hide my toy soldier purchases from her, but assault rifles and Rudy's are another story.
