The weather is getting dismal so it's just about that time again. Preseason games starting this week. "Happy Gilmore" Lucic is now with my Kings. Interested to see how that works out. Justin "game seven" Williams to the Caps.

I still have a while to go. The two places I call home are still very warm. 95 in California and 96 in Texas today.

I do find myself checking for hockey news though so I am getting there!

A 41-game suspension for a cheap shot in preseason. San Jose needs Brady's lawyer.

The guy has a sports rap sheet, that makes most of the in the grave past hockey goons blush and look like boy scouts..Michael

After starting the season 0-3 my Kings have won six straight. Looking good.

I finally saw something new at an AHL game last night. There is a fan who sits behind the opposing team's bench and taunts them through much of the game. He really gets under their skin as I've seen several players react to him. He has been doing this for some years. So last night the visiting team tapes up a towel to the glass and then a chalkboard which effectively blocks his entire view. A season ticket holder sitting in the first row can't see a thing. The guy apparently goes off and starts kicking the glass. The game comes to a halt while security informs the guy they are moving him. There is a standoff since the guy pleads his case that he has paid for the seat but can't see anything. Security is unmoved by his plight but he refuses to move. Finally the police are called. I guess they threaten to arrest the guy because he finally agrees to leave. Ten thousand people and the game are delayed for several minutes to sort it all out. Frankly, I would not have been very happy if I were the fan. It was an intentional act since within seconds after the guy was escorted away the opposing team yanks down the chalkboard.

Just reading about new security precautions for the AHL game tonight in rural PA thousands of miles from France. An indicator of how far reaching those attacks are. Very sad and unfortunate to see kids entering a hockey game getting searched.

The Kings look like they are back in business. They just won four in a row at home against the likes of Chicago, Vancouver, Tampa and Pittsburgh. Only the fifth time in team history that they have swept a four game home stand and against some good teams. The trade for Lucic is paying off as he now has ten goals putting him only one goal behind Toffoli as the top goal scorer on the team. Missing the playoffs and getting rested has really helped (along with three on three OT play).

I should check the standings every so often. Had no idea the Caps have the best record in the NHL. -- Al

The Caps are rolling this year. They were down 3-0 to the Rangers last weekend and came back to win. They may be the favorites in the East if they stay healthy. It's probably now or never for them as Ovechkin is not getting any younger.

Caps have rolled before during the regular season, but the playoffs are another matter. The Caps always find a way to lose in the end. -- Al

Being a Blues fan I know how good he is but do the rest of the league's fans realize that Tarasenko is now a superstar! Best goal scorer the Blues have had since Hull.

Just checked the standings and it actually hurts to see Dallas playing so well with Neimi. He was a sieve with the Sharks now he is playing like Patrick Roy?

Had a chance to attend the Preds-Rangers game this week in Nashville. My first NHL game in a couple of years. Other than the outrageous ticket prices and live band they stole from some Holiday Inn that played between periods it was great. Nice facility in Nashville. The Preds also lit up Lundqvist. I've never seen the Rangers look so inept with him in goal.

Speaking of Nashville. A couple of years ago we drove from St Louis to Nashville to see the Blues play the Preds. With a minute or so left in the 1st period I left my seat and walked into the restroom and into a stall. When I came out there was a line of women inside the restroom waiting. Yea you guessed it I had gone into the wrong one. As I walked out, with a red face, I just said I'm from St Louis and don't know any better. We did win 1 to 0.

I feel your pain; I see Seguin is lighting up the league, has become the true superstar he never quite was here in Boston. They traded him away for two bags of pucks, what a disaster of a trade.

Sometimes all it takes is a change of scenery.

Lucic is also doing well in LA. They haven't exactly sorted out where he works best but his numbers have been good.

Just when the Caps are looking Cup bound they go and sign Mike Richards. A washed up troubled player recently arrested. Tell me why? He looked awful the last few seasons with the Kings. If they get anything out of him it will be a miracle.

Terrific game between the Caps and Rangers this afternoon. The Caps pull their goalie and get the tying goal with 5 seconds left. In OT they get a miracle save from a defenseman, Ovi takes the puck down the ice like a jet fighter and fires the winning goal past Lundqvist. That was a thing of beauty.

Time for the mid season power ranking. Very Western Conference oriented with the Central Division leading the way. When Florida is leading a division in the East you know it is a down year. Here are my top five cup contenders:

1) Chicago
2) Washington
3) LA
4) Dallas
5) St. Louis
