66th Regiment Gatling gun section on route to base camp at Kandahar early 1880

A group of Afghans think they will attack this small party of British soldiers and capture the supply elephant, little do they know….........

........the Gatling gun is quickly assembled and bought into action, only one Broadwell Drum (magazine) is needed, the Gatling gun works perfectly with no jams.

The Afghan threat disappears

Today, July 27th, is the 135 anniversary of the Battle of Maiwand 1880

http://www.britishbattles.com/second-afghan-war/maiwand.htm

Here soldiers from the 66th Regiment prepare for the Afghan attack

Bobbie the Dog was present at the Battle of Maiwand with the 66th Regiment, she sits here at the feet of Sergeant Kelly her owner.

Bobbie survived the Second Afghan War and was awarded her Afghan campaign medal by Queen Victoria, sadly only to be run over by a tram in Portsmouth. Bobbie was stuffed and given a place of honour in the Wiltshire and Berkshire Regimental Museum in Salisbury Cathedral Close.
