On the 3rd March 1943 one hundred and seventy two people were killed and many injured in the worst civilian disaster to take place in Britain during Ww2 . (and worst ever on underground) Panicked by the sound of new rockets being fired in a nearby park local residents poured into Bethnal Green tube station. Someone tripped at the bottom of the stairway and in the resulting crush the one hundred and seventy two people died. Whole families were killed together. Although hushed up at first the resulting inquiry decided that although light and safety handles in the stairway were poor it was the mass reaction so many people that caused the disaster. Work has just begun on turning the whole staircase into a memorial to those who died.

Complete mess considering it was not an air raid and, usually people were more calm when the germans were overhead. Strange what many had gone through to die from such a tragic accident. A fitting memorial that would be

Was thinking the same when i read Robs post.

It was a tragic and very sad event, and as you say terrible they should die this way, many children died in their parents arms down there. There has been arguments for many years regarding what happened with various explanations put forward but it does seem that the people of Bethnal Green having never heard anything like these new rockets believed they were under attack from a new weapon. Its hard to understand that despite the Blitz and V1's and V2's raining down on them the worst disaster during the War was this ' self inflicted ' incident.

Here's a pic of the original plaque and the story itself
