I agree with comments made by Charles.

Re: 88 Tear Old Waffen SS Soldier Tried For War Crimes

There is no time limit on justice. If he were 100 and there was proof of his crimes he should be jailed. The failure to pursue many war criminals does not grant those who are caught special consideration. If one drink driver who kills someone is caught while nine others escape justice, he better not stand in front of a jury I am on and ask why aren't we out searching for them.

That said, I would not be happy living next door to some of the people who commented on the article. Had they been born in another age with that moral system they would be the ones killing the villagers. I cannot wait until it goes to court and someone with a moral elasticity tries to claim that the Western Allies were just as bad.

Jack said it all. For what was done in this particular town, which is well known, no punishment can be spared. Unfortunately, he will probably never meet the hangman. May he and his kind rot in hell.

I've been to this place. And fully agree Brad, may all the human excrement that carried out this act burn in hell for eternity. Thank God for the good people of the World who stood up back then. The Greatest generation as Louis has often called them.

I would tend to say the Criminals that tried to wipe this town and its people off of the map should be wiped off the map as well when caught.

Firstly, it must be proved that he took part in the killings, not easy task after 70 years. Then, I remind that in Europe there is no death penalty and that in many countries old men don' t go to jail. So, this trial will finish, at worst for him, in a " home arrest" like Erich Priebke, one guilty for the " fosse ardeatine" killings in Rome.

Well said, it's good that the decent people of the world still want justice for anyone convicted of War crimes, if he's guilty he should rot in jail.

I agree that it should be proved without a doubt that he is guilty, and if so put him in jail ^&cool

That is the beauty of the system of justice ensured by the victory in 1945. That is the same consideration offered to anyone.

How come we don't here about any japenese being hunted to the ends of the earth for all there war crimes, they where just as bad if not worst in some cases ???????

Wayne, don't you know? There's no Japanese to hunt down. They lose, they kill themselves.

This is a very good point brought up Wayne, wonder how many that did commit war crimes and did not commit suicide are still on the loose ^&confuse

I did a little (only a very little so very happy to hear from a real expert) reading about the Japanese war trials a few years ago - all American or Australian secondary sources as I cannot speak a word of the language - and to put it simply, the Allies just lost interest and patience. Everything took longer, they had trouble identifying who was who, the barriers of language and customs were almost insurmountable in the time available plus a myriad of other problems that meant they just seemed to drag on and on. Then with the added issues of the Cold War and the desire to protect the Emperor it was a more difficult task than in Germany. There were more trials than just the main ones but there is of course the suspicion, true or not, that war crimes committed in Europe may have been viewed differently than their Asia/Pacific counterparts. The 'injustice' of the Tokyo War Crimes Trial (injustice may not be the right word I fear) was that men such as Tojo were helped to assume full responsibility with the shared aim of protecting the Emperor. So it was a bit of a reverse situation - claiming responsibility at lower levels which was the reverse of the European situation. The supreme authority, which was the Emperor, was presented as a figurehead. I remember, vaguely, that Tojo may have made a statement that tended to implicate the Emperor when he heard his family was without coal for the winter. The coal then duly arrived. There was also a false (I think) rumour doing the rounds that Australia got the ANZUS treaty committing America to protecting Australian interests as a reward for our support for leaving the Emperor alone. The dates do not add up but a good story. If you accept the death penalty at War Crimes Trials it is difficult to understand why the Emperor did not swing with the others unless post war considerations are taken into account.

Maybe President Truman felt that incinerating Hiroshima and Nagasaki sent enough of a message and retribution. It was a new age.

Those A-Bombs definitely sent a message to the Japanese empire

Germany had the **** bombed out of it to but that hasn't stop the hunting down of war criminals,so why should the Japanese be any different.
Culture, religion etc shouldn't be a fact they where pigs end of story, just as bad as the Germans.

Very true, I dont care what the Japenese ethos was , some of them were filth for the way they treated allied pow's . I'm sure someone will now step forward and tell me I'm wrong, but wasnt there a lot more torture and ill treatment of allied prisoners by the Japs than the Germans?? To give him his due its not something i imagine Rommel would have allowed.

Pigs is the right word for those responsible Wayne
