I’ve just completed building a number of wooden boxes in anticipation of more dioramas. So what shall I do rhetorically? I scrounged around and came up with this haul of pithy heads. Then it occurred to me to do a cavalry charge scene with these heads.

I also rounded up my pile of discarded horse parts. Ok, let’s try to use up some airfix horse parts here. I have an aversion to their horses as airfix horses are never as elegant as Historex horses. So here is the start of another expedition, hopefully not doomed by the natives…. Oops. A giveaway.

Hi John

fantastic figures. Glossy, khaki colonial cavalry. That’s the main draw of our nostalgic interests in our hobby. 😂

Dangerously close to my proposed piece here. HahahHhH.

Here be three beasties. I must remember that horses are not bisons and must try to sculpt better. Hahahahaha.

Hi Luiz

excellent display! Rather overwhelming don’t you think? 😂😂😂😂
You’ve covered it all. HahahahahA.

At this stage, I might as well give up on this project. But I still have my hoard of pith helmets and these beasties are crying out for attention. Some more work done on their proportions.

Yes, I’m trying to do the charge of the 21st lancers at Omdurman. Guess it was rather obvious. Hahaha. Several great paintings done on this.

The first three horses are well in progress. Other horse parts are posed ard to create the melee.

Making good progress on 5 mtd figures. I sacrificed several vintage airfix bengal lancer kits for the saddles, rifles, lances and puttee legs.

Hi Luiz

yes. Action packed all the way. That’s for me too!

Starting to work on the natives. It’s quite fun to “dress up” my pieces with interchangeable parts, like playing with swoppets. I use wire joints to pose the figures.

Here are three foot natives and 1 mtd native. I liked using some of my own miscast feet for the natives. These are the grey parts.

As the focus is on the 21st lancers, I’m doing my best to get realistic anatomies and poses that match closely to the ptg.

for eg, I readjusted the height of the front holsters.

Victor, are you going to be altering the Wolseley pattern helmets? That style of pith helmet was not introduced until 1899, a year after Omdurman. The 21st wore the Colonial pattern at the time of the battle.

Hi Mike,

I tk yr input is valid. Omdurman was 1898. The Wolseley was officially adopted in 1899. Prior to that, it was the colonial pattern. I see pics which show a mixture of both types in use at Omdurman. There appears to be several variants of both typew as well, probably different makers.

I lowered the seat on all the figures. These two are officers so are wearing boots. Now slowly adding details. Officers had breast and skirt pockets and Sam Browne holsters.

A wounded officer on a downed horse. The leg pose was completely resculpted.
the charging cavalryman with lance eventually had his right hand subst for a smaller hand. I added the shoulder bandolier.
