Interesting aside; Galland's reply to Goering was not that he thought the Spitfire superior to the 109, rather it was better suited to the close support of bomber formations imposed by Goering on Galland.
Galland preferred his fighters to be free ranging so as they could attack enemy fighters where the 109's performance charactaristics could be used to best advantage.
