Guys, can anyone help me as to where I may find an American Civil war fold out type map that has all the major Battle sites on it. I'm not looking for any Road map type map, but one that perhaps shows all the states and where these batlles took place, kind of like a tourist / Novice map?. Basically a Normal map of American states with Battles highlighted. Any help would be of great help as I'd like to be able to check roughly where I am when reading of ACW clashes.

Thanks in advance for any help

Rob

There are some books to that effect. Is it a book that you want?

I'd try eBay. I think National Geographic and American Heritage both had such maps, and not just for the Civil War, but for the Revolution, too.

I think you might find such items relatively quickly on eBay.

Hope that helps!

Prost!
Brad

Thanks guys that's all very helpful indeed and just what I'm looking for. Brad, I'm looking for a map I can put up in my office so I can familiarise myself with the actions over time.

Thanks again guys

Some time ago Time Life produced a three book set called "Echoes of Glory". One volume dealt with original photographs of Union kit, rifles, artillery, flags and uniforms, the second dealt with the Confederacy in similar fashion and the third was full of maps of all the actions. It may not be the single map you are looking for , Rob, but if you are discovering an interest in the ACW you will be well pleased with the set, Trooper

Hi Rob

You now have me well impressed with your continual curiousity of mine and Brad's war. But re: your enquiry I must have at least two dozen maps kicking about in my study which I have to admit I don't use much these days.

Now that's not to say the Reb knows where every single battle of the war is located-far from it. But instead I use two volumes I can recommend which have become my bibles for locating practically every scrap -big and small-fought between Johnny Reb and Billy Yank which just might suit you better.

The West Point Atlas for the American Civil War by Thomas E Griess

The Atlas of the Civil War by James M McPherson.

Both large format books that include fold out maps of both the Eastern and Western Theatres in the front of the book. Then in addition to that each battle/fight is detailed with blow-ups of the particular area, troop movements and who was in command etc. and in full colour. There are a couple of small errors in both books but nothing to worry you about. The Union still wins the War :smile2:

Had a quick look on Amazon UK and the McPherson tome is on there for a fiver. If you are seriously interested trust me this will be the best fiver you spend this year and can assure you will not be disappointed.

If all else fails I'll bring you maps of the Eastern and Western theaters to the London show in June. My God I have to nurture a keen apprentice of the ACW cos that'll make about five of us here on TreeFrog {sm4}

Let me know how you get on

Bob

I was going to recommend McPherson's book but it didn't sound like Rob wanted a book, which is why I asked. However, it is a good book and since Bob has recommended it, have you purchased it yet? :smile2:

I think Bob was the one who recommended it to me also.

Rob, this is the map I have and it is a good one. -- Al

Thanks to all you guys, you really are a big help, this has given me lots of choice.

Hey Bob,

Thank you my friend, very kind of you. I think I'm going to go for a map for my office and the Atlas as well.

I am well and truly hooked Bob!. For me the ACW has always been my 'Other War mistress' as it were:wink2:. My non World War interest that I've always wanted to get into but for some reason never really got round to it, but now I'm in!. I am just loving ' The coming fury' its grabbed me in the first few pages and I can't put it down, in fact the missus had to cook the dinner tonight!. So I will no doubt have many questions for your good self,Al, Brad and co over the coming months.

So here's my plan of campaign my friend;

The Bruce Catton trilogy and The impending crisis
The Atlas from Amazon that I am about to order
If you should have a map you no longer require I would be very grateful but I don't want to pinch your stuff mate.I may also get the Nat geographic one.
And then I want to buy Osprey's Campaign series of ACW Battles in the order they took place. Now these are not in depth books but just to give me an overview of each battle between reading more in depth tomes.

And finally to give you a clue whats on my mind.....I may buy a Reb or Union Conte dead and wounded set from Maison Militaire at the London show:wink2:

Right,off to Amazon and ebay!

Who knows, in a years time my forum name could be 'UK Union Rob':wink2:

Cheers Bob and all you guys that took the trouble

Rob

Is the McPherson book you all are speaking of the oversize book of maps that is adapted from the Official Records maps? If so, it is a spectacular book and, as Bob and Brad say, well worth having. The edition I remember is a huge book. -- Al

They have the mother of all Civil War gift shops at the Gettysburg Visitor center. Lots of stuff online - this might be helpful: http://enssc.com/Products.aspx?story=140

A bit off topic, but I recall someone makes computer CDs for each of the major Civil War battles. They play out the movements of troops for the entire battle with notations of times and events. It's an entirely different way to follow the events and you would be surprised how much you learn, regardless of expertise, by actually seeing it happen rather than reading about it.

Hi Rob. Not to fan the flames of war, but for a very good Grayer view of the ACW battles, try "Lee's Lieutenants: A Study in Command" by Douglas Southall Freeman. It is a three volume history and a classic. No self-respecting ACW historian or buff should be without it. ^&grin -- Al

Don't forget McPherson's tome on the Civil War. That's definitely well worth picking up.

The problem is so much to read, so little time :redface2:

Brad, truer words were never spoken. The amount of ACW books is simply staggering. The gentleman I worked for when I was in the book business was primarily a ACW dealer. He brought me in to the job when he branched out into other military books, but his inventory of ACW was huge, numbering several thousand at any one time, and this was just the tip of the iceberg. That was twenty+ years ago and the number of publications on the ACW has grown by leaps and bounds each year. It never stops. -- Al
