Would anyone know what of plane was AF-014 intended for? The P51 Mustangs didn't need a ladder as the pilot and crew would climb from the rear of the wing within the walkway. I presume P-47? I've seen photos of the P47 where the ailerons extend all the way to the fuselage and has a warning sign "No Step." Which means the pilot has to climb from the front of the wings which would require a ladder. Not sure if the photos posted here are accurate in terms of ladder placement.

So far I have never seen a picture of a P 47 with a ladder for the pilot to climb into the cockpit. P 47's were also used on aircraft carriers . I don't think they had time on deck to put ladders against every plane before take off or during a scramble. I add some pictures that show no ladders around to climb into the cockpit.

Excellet pictures NP.

I'm not sure either what AF014 would be designed specifically for. I'm with Guy as I've never seen a picture of a P-47 or P-51 pilot using a ladder to climb onto the plane. P-38's had their own retractable ladder coming out from behind the cockpit providing access from the rear, so it wouldn't be that plane. Both P-47's and P-51's had the red "No Step" areas placed right at the wing root and flaps.

I think the ladder for a B-17 &could be used for a DC3

Ladders were not used to climb into a P47. The pilot reaches up for the closest retractable handle, pulls it and both retractable handles come out. Using the first handle, he puts his foot in the wing gutter right where the rear of the wing meets the fuselage. He then pulls himself up on the wing using the retractable handles. In Guy's post, the handles are retracted into the fuselage and appear in photo 2 as horizontal slits about 12" long just to the left of the "LM" and just to the right of the 3rd row of kill marks. The handles are also visible in the 4th photo.

I guess I'll have to remove the ladder and re-position the foot to make it look like its climbing from the wing backside fuselage.

Thanks Terry

C47 crew would have entered thru cargo door.

Think the B17 had its own ladder with crew hatch.
The question was where could you use this figure and on both them planes you could .

Why not have a Crew Chief and or mechanic standing next to the pilot & ladder combo and use him in a diorama as if he is inspecting a repair or similar...or he is recovering from an injury and needs the ladder to climb up. Just an idea but I know Arnold has the "skills" to turn the figure into anything he wants.

Perhaps he is just the squadron window cleaner!!!!!!

You're probably right Mitch. The squadron window cleaner dressed up as a pilot just to melt in with the rest of the flying boys.
