A friend of mine made this kit of the African Queen with Humphrey Bogart and Katherine Hepburn.

Nice model - just thought it would be nice to be able to compare it with the real thing - as she was in the film made in 1951.

The African Queen was born in Britain in 1912 - and was built by the Abdela & Mitchell shipyard in Branscombe, Gloucestershire. She was sent to Africa, overland, and used by the East Africa Railway Company to transport cargo and passengers over the Ruki River and Lake Albert on the borders of the (then) Belgian Congo and Uganda. She was discovered by the Movie Director John Huston and Producer Sam Spiegel whilst Location scouting for the movie in 1950.

During the making of the movie, nearly everyone except Bogie and Huston got sick from fevers an/or malaria. Bogie famously claimed that the reason he stayed so healthy was that he ate only canned beans and asparagus - and drank only whisky!

The boat was later owned by an American entrepeneur - Jin Hendrickson - who restored the boat at Key Largo, Florida around 1968 - where it became a tourist attraction. After his death, it was owned by his son - also Jim Hendrickson - but I'm uncertain whether she is still working - or even still there - as I believe she was later sold. Perhaps one of our American members can complete the story??? johnnybach

I am impressed, and I hate to be picky,but will have to be. The Union Flag is upside down. I am sorry to be the one to point this out, hope your friend takes it as constructive criticism. That is one classic model, just like the film.

MikeNick, This is really nice. One of my favorite and most studied periods is the Colonial periods in Africa by all Countries from the late 1800's to the end of WW1. Also one of my favorite movies.

Very Nice Model and figures.

I know my eyes are a bit old but .... an upside down Union flag? Really? The flag in a mirror image, isn't it; No top or bottom.

Rose Sayer: I never dreamed that any mere physical experience could be so stimulating!

..and that was going through the white water!

Many years ago someone locally built the African Queen on parade float for July 4. It was a hit. Kicking the stuck valve and all.

I wasn't too sure what you meant by "in a mirror image", it doesn't matter if it is a mirror image, it is still upside-down. No offence intended. :)

Thank you Scott. That is a brilliant picture, given the age of the film etc. I am not sure how an exact replica of that flag would look in a small scale, probably would just look like it was painted in a rather naive way. I personally prefer the look of models in a dirty, well worn state, just like the African Queen looked in the film. I do admire the pristine model that has been made, but much prefer to see oil stains & soot all over.
The same is for any Colonial troops in 54mm, they all tend to have immaculate brilliant white trousers, whereas in reality, they were a dirty off-white, in fact they were stained with Tea as a primitive type of camouflage.

That might work for a waterline model. This "toy" version works as clean and tidy.

OH, OH, I see it now. I am very sorry to the Brit's here. I didn't realize that there was a difference in the thickness of the white stripes and the red one inside. I thought the red stripe was centered in the middle of the white.
Wow, all these years ... gee ... {sm2} {sm2}

For penance I will sing Rule, Britannia 13 times.
You might want to log off and cover your ears.

Okay …..

When Britain first, at Heaven's command
Arose from out the azure main;
This was the charter of the land,
And guardian angels sang this strain:
"Rule, Britannia! rule the waves:
"Britons never will be slaves."

Larry, does that sound as bad as it reads??? ;) No need to be sorry, even us Brits get it wrong sometimes, I just think attention to detail is so important in this hobby. If I have stopped anyone from making a simple mistake, then it was worth it. I had no intention of being sarcastic.

YES, it sounded even worse that it read. I am afraid I just blew my chances of getting a visa to visit the UK any time soon.
NO you wern't being a bit sarcastic .... the idea behind this fourm (and, I would guess) any other craft and hobby forum is to help others and provide tips and useful information.

TRUE that I know 99.95% of "ALL" knowledge in the Universe :rolleyes: {eek3} :rolleyes: but I didn't know that .... Now I do.
Many thanks, sir

Larry
