Hi All:

Continuing my reviews of a modest collection of Collector's Showcase (CS) Afrikakorps sets, I share with you figure set CS00234 Grenadier Assault Team.

So this is Tobruk 1942, as displayed on the bottom of each figure from this splendid 3-figure collection. I believe this set was released in 2007, although I can't seem to locate the reference I previously obtained on the web. This is my first CS figure set without a vehicle and although I have been looking at the tank rider and jumper sets, I thought I'd take a step back and purchase a retired set.

First impression from this 3-pack is that the figures are a hard-charging, aggressive team ready to kick some British 8th Army a$$, everything we would want in a DAK "Assault Team". Although supposedly limited to 300 pieces, no mention of a limited edition or certificate of authenticity is contained on or in the box; but that is okay, for the figure details more than make up for it.

This three-figure set includes a grenade (mash potato) thrower, rifleman, and machine gunner. Realistic action poses bring these figures to life as they aim their weapons at whatever you choose in your tabletop diorama. Initially, I was not crazy about the grenade thrower as the grenade is attached to the figure's extended hand by an additional piece of metal. After photographing, I had a thought to remove the extension through some photo editing and the trick worked creating a great action shot (as seen below). I like the rifleman as the figure/pose can be placed on any building roof top or behind an emplacement for shooting/sniper action. The machine gunner is more in a marching pose as he gets ready to lay his rifle on the ground to shoot at the advancing 8th Army. Flat paint, use of a nice desert color palette, and fine detailing make these figures an outstanding set.

Rating

Assembly/Components: 4.4/5 - no attachments but removable bases would have been a nice addition. (-.5)
Color Scheme: 5/5 - excellent flat colors including a medium tan with traces of darker brown/black for shadowing used for pants & cap; light green with shadowing used for the field jacket; gun metal silver with traces of black for guns and grenade tip, and a few other colors for added detail.
Design/Mold: 5/5 - these are not the standard soldiers holding machine gun poses but rather all creative action poses ready for battle! In addition, the ground bases are well done with nice color/detailing.
Paint Quality: 5/5 - outstanding paint job on all three figures. Additional detailing like the Afrikakorps arm band one can actually read and well detailed stripes make these some really well-painted figures.
Decals: n/a - no decals thank goodness.
Details: 5/5 fantastic detailing as mentioned under Paint Quality. Additional detailing including gun straps, canteens, gas mask canisters, and helmet chin straps really add to the quality of the figures.
Figures: n/a - as this is a figure set, no rating here
Playability: 5/5 - I'm enjoying various placement of the figures in front of my Tiger and Rommel Command Car and one figure with smaller base actually fits on the seat of my Command Car - fun!
Price: 5/5 - I've seen this set go for $49 - $80 and I was able to purchase mine toward the lower end. The new two-man Jumper and Rider sets go for $59 each, so for three figures I'd say a price under $60 is pretty good for three figures (and nice ones I would add).
Display/Eye Appeal: 5/5 - Overall, these three figures go well with one another (they make a great team), and setting them up together looks fantastic. Eye appeal is a strong 5!

Overall Score: 39.5/40 or 98.8% - this is a sweet set!

Summary

The CS Grenadier Assault Team is a wonderful three-pack of DAK figures well worth purchasing if you are a fan of the Afrikakorps. They can be added to any Afrikakorps diorama to lead your motorized infantry or placed in a town/village environment ready for battle action. I am well pleased with this set and would certainly buy again.

Let's see them in action:

I have all the DAK range and everything they did in this period was superb. I have posted pics and commented upon these figures before and, agree they are excellent. Much was said about their facial sculpts and pose but, to me they always were what you expect from war torn weary fighting troops. Non of the rather bizarre ghoulish comments applied.

Another point that was raised was the scale of the Kettenkraftrad from this range but, that's aside its a nice piece. The Panzer I. I commented on as its still one of the best models I have seen on the market and detail is excellent. The same applies to the Motorcycle and side car and the pick of the bunch the 88mm gun and crew.

Superb stuff from CS at this period in time and this applies to the early SS fighting troops and PAK and the US they are superb.

Good to know Mitch - appreciate you dropping a comment here. I've read some of your other thoughts re. the CS line, especially their newer line-up. You've reassured me that this was a nice purchase esp. since I almost passed it up. Thanks for that.

Thanks for the review, do you have any Normandy CS items you could review?
