Hello all-

Introduction to 1/30

With a lot of discussion about the scale of The Collector's Showcase (CS) new Afrikakorps and Winter Tiger Tanks, I thought I would share a different perspective based upon my own view of the CS Afrikakorps Tiger, a critical review. First, let me say that I am a complete "newbie" when it comes to 1/30th scale items, CS or King and Country (KC). Rather, I've been collecting Ultimate Soldier/21st Century, Force of Valor, CTS, and Marx plastic and die cast 1/32 scale toy soldiers and vehicles admiring the wonderful items produced by CS and KC. My plan was to first buy the CS exclusive Tiger and purchase an additional item every month or two in hope of building a nice Afrikakorps diorama. Completely split between CS and KC, I honestly was not sure which to collect. The limited edition Tiger; supposedly 100 in number, eventually sold me on CS.

The Good

Packaging and Weight

I received my new Tiger a few weeks ago in a well-packaged sturdy box. A nice box is important to me as I like to save and sometimes store my collectibles in their original boxes when not displayed. As I carefully removed each component from the Styrofoam, I was immediately impressed with the sheer weight of the pieces, especially the 3/4 figure.

Color & Details

I am most impressed by the color, weathering, and numerous details of the Tiger. For a huge fan of Afrikakorps and North African campaign, this Tiger's paint scheme is excellent.

One has to love all the painted tools and the detailing of the back end:

Completing the short assembly of various components, the final tank looks fantastic. I can just imagine it in a larger battle scene with other vehicles, figures, and desert terrain:

The Bad

Limited Edition, Really?

No certificate is contained within this exclusive limited edition Tiger, the item is not numbered in any way, and aside from the web site listing, what makes this a limited edition? What's to stop CS from purchasing a few more 100 or 1,000 from China and saying the limited edition Tiger has been re-released? Not sure but I suppose this rests with the reputation of CS as a company.

Component Assembly

The Tiger has three removable hatches. Each hatch has one in open and one in closed position, for a total of six. Unlike all my 1/32 die cast and plastic vehicles, one must change/swap open and closed hatches rather than having a hatch that can open and close. Perhaps the material does not lend itself to being able to open and close, but this surprises me as a collector, esp. of an item with this amount of detail. In addition, two fender/tread covers must be attached to the rear of the tank. I found these very hard to attach into the rear slits.

dsc02727.jpg

The two smaller headlight pieces simply stick into a small holes and easily fall off. Is one suppose to glue these into place?

Turret Decals

I was truly surprised upon noticing that the numbers 713 on the turret (positioned on sides and rear) are decals. I own numerous Ultimate Soldier and Forces of Valor die cast vehicles that have painted decals. I would expect a much higher degree of quality as this is suppose to be a "museum quality" item.

dsc02728.jpg

In addition, one can see the air in the decals at certain angles as pictured.

Non-Locking Turret

There is nothing that keeps the turret from lifting off the main tank assembly.

dsc02730.jpg

Although it looks like a piece should be attached to each side of the turret to lock it in, the turret can be lifted off in any position. Was something left off my tank, who knows?

Limp Barrel/Gun

The barrel/gun is limp. Although it does move upward, it quickly falls back down. Although difficult to see, one ring on the hinge/rod of my tank appears to be partially broken. This is not the cause of the limp barrel, just something I wanted to point out:

dsc02729.jpg

Half Soldiers

If you're expecting complete figures, don't! While I understand the half soldier used for the lower front of the tank, the turret figure is missing his right foot/boot. I believe this could have been made to fit within the turret and still be complete.

To be continued next post. Please refrain from commenting until part two is available - thanks.

Continuing my review of the CS Afrikakorps Tiger Tank...

Paint Matching

Take a look at the paint job in the front:

dsc02733.jpg

Not sure if this is intentional or not, but one has to wonder?

In addition, although not pictured, all the hatches of the tank are somewhat off-color when compared to the color of the tank - not the best paint quality.

Excess Glue

Very minor and not to "nit-pick", but this is the inside of the tank:

dsc02735.jpg

Non-Rolling Treads

While I completely understand that this is a "museum-style" item, I would have loved to have some rolling metal treads on this Tiger. Do any of the 1/30 scale tank manufacturers having rolling treads?

The Ugly

I'd like to share a few pictures of 1/32 scale Ultimate Soldier Panzer for comparison:

dsc02741.jpg

I believe this Panzer originally sold for somewhere in the neighborhood of $25 - $30.

It has opening hatches:

Painted emblems:

Rolling treads:

And a barrel/gun that stays in position when lifting:

dsc02745.jpg

And a comparison of an Ultimate Soldier figure with CS:

dsc02746.jpg

With the utmost respect intended to the CS Company and Brian, this CS Tiger is $200 worth of Chinese quality. As mentioned in my introduction, I was honestly planning to collect a piece or two each/every other month, but I'm honestly not sure after this initial purchase. While I am honestly impressed with the fine details, paint colors, and solid design, I'm looking at this Tiger compared to my little Ultimate Soldier Panzer thinking, do I want to spend a $1000 on a Collector's Showcase diorama? There are some fantastic pieces among the CS collection that I still have my eyes on. I'm also wondering if King & Country has better quality? Lastly, while many of you still have issues with the scale, I rate the size less of an issue than the overall quality of the CS Afrikakorps Tiger.

Excellent summary and, I have to say some eye opening issues that I have not seen with CS models. I will probably be shouted down or, reported by one of the mitch police but, that's not the quality I expect or have in my own CS collection.

I like tonal colour on AFV's and will paint in a moderation manner to achieve that effect but, I am not sure if that's what has been attempted here or, its just painting in a strange manner.

What does make me wonder is why the driver of a desert tiger has SS runes and rank????

Decals recently have been problematic from not being affixed correctly into zimmerit to having what looks to be no decal medium to hide the decal fixer from view being applied

I am sadly not impressed with the Tigers I was not when I saw the pictures and, this ''in depth'' look has not changed it. Many will like it and be happy but, for me CS has left behind what I really liked about the company and their releases. the early tigers, marder, all the early DAK range stugs were simply superb and remain some of the best stuff on the market sadly in recent years I can only say this about the Jagdpanther which, was so good I now have four.

I did mention that of the Tigers released the K&C were the better versions across the manufacturers and, nothing that I have seen in picture or in person having now received both figarti desert and grey version (both came with damage!!!) has changed that view.

A very interesting critique of the desert tiger

Appreciate your feedback Mitch. I truly hope that other items produced by CS are of better quality - I still have my eyes on a few. For the price, (almost $200 with shipping), I was expecting "A" quality and got something I would rate as a "C/C+", esp. compared to some of my 1/32 collection. I would like to point out that I honestly still like it. In fact, I have it prominently displayed in a glass cabinet. At the same time; I can't say that I'm overly thrilled about it and actually, a bit disappointed. This first purchase and introduction to 1/30th was important for me.

I always ask the question, would I buy again? I'm not sure that I would.

This hobby is getting to be a real mess....

If you look at the the Figarti, K&C and TCS Tiger releases, they all have their good and bad points.

Maybe someday some company will put it all together.

One could argue maybe FL already has, but the cost is tough.

Sometimes you wonder if FOV is not the best bang for the buck. I have detailed and weathered some of their stuff and they look excellent.

OH WELL

The error with the tank driver's insignia is rather inexcusable. I like CS's Tigers but one issue I have had with all their vehicles are the decals. Some solution should be found, such as pad painting them, which is common on die-cast. The non-working tracks are typical of the industry as no one does them in 1/30 scale. All in all, the CS AK Tiger looks pretty good to me, especially for the price. -- Al

You may want to check with other dealers and most would have shipped this item for free !!!

Thanks for adding - good to know when it comes to 1/30.

Thanks - unfortunately no such luck from the main CS store.

I love FOV! I've been real happy with every FOV vehicle I've purchased, although their figs are a bit small for 1/32.

I've compiled a quick rating system to help score the Tiger. A 5-point scale for each measure:

Assembly/Components: 3 - rear tread covers difficult to attach (-1), turret does not lock on (-1), front open hatch virtually impossible to attach
Color Scheme: 5 - love the Afrikakorps paint scheme, overall nice colors, like the weathering
Design/Mold: 5 - some might say the scale is too large, but I'm well pleased with the overall design
Paint Quality: 3 - Front top side panel color way off (-1), all hatches off-color (-1)
Decals: 3 - air in side turret decals (-2)
Details: 5 - very nice tools, cables, and extras affixed to tank
Figures: 3 - neither figure is complete, one missing boot/foot (-2)
Playability: 3 - non-rolling treads (although this appears to be an industry standard for 1/30), hatches that do not open but rather detach, limp barrel (-2)
Price: 4 - had to pay for shipping and my subjective rating based on the value for the price (-1)
Display/Eye Appeal: 5 - looks great on the shelf

Overall Rating: 39/50; 3.9/5 or 78% - C+. I had higher expectations but feel this is a fair rating.

It is refreshing to see your review as a newcomer who is not biased, that is hard to find here, as there are so many who have their favorites and support them no matter what.
I think you have been fair with your assessment, I wish you had other AFV's by different companies. I would like to know what you think of them.

This stuff costs a lot of money and all of the biases and agendas by many never get the true story out, which lets the manufacturers get away with a lot. Some think the Manufacturers are gods who are all knowing. I actually think us collectors / modelers know more than them most of the time.

Good Job
Alex

Western Outlaw ,

Just wanted to say really enjoyed reading through your concise review...As i am also a huge DAK collector , & personally do not own any CS products , so i was quite interested to see it reviewed in the manner you presented ! When referring to FOV & 21st Century toys i agree with you as i own quite a few of them , as i mentioned to you before they are hard to beat for what you get for the price that is...

Joe

Thank you Western Outlaw for this wonderful review with pictures.

Yes, it does seems disappointing for a museum quality item - and from the pictures the tank looks hollow and like is made of plastic glued togther.

I was looking over my AK Tiger. My turret locks in fine and the barrel is fine as well. Paint seems to be fine on all the haches. You need to contact Brian on the turret right away, its missing two pieces that lock it on to the hull.

Seems like the other AK Tiger is defective and not the norm

Very interesting and useful review. Elsewhere on the forum is a review of the CS Wittman Tiger where at least one model the barrel "kill rings" have been put on upside own, That review and this would indicate CS have certain research and quality control issues with at least some of their products.

I also like FoV and 21st Century, pity the latter are no longer in production (pock them up while you can, but at least FoV are still producing repaints and new models such as the recent Firefly.

I know very little about Tigers but as an educator I know that 78% is generally a B!{sm4}

I'll take the Tiger that you have :wink2:

Brian sent me a replacement turret and it locks in (has the two pieces) and the barrel stays lifted at various angles. My Tiger is now up to par. Thanks for the advice OTK.

Sounds great :salute:: ..........Case Closed. Time to move on Mates :wink2:

Nice that you got the replacement, only what you deserve really but, it should never have been sent in that state. hopefully threads like this will get CS to address these issues in future
