I received my sets on Thursday and on the Greif and the field gun, there were a couple of places where the paint (desert colors) came off or was never painted. I think the paint job could have been a teeney better but whatever they're fantastic pieces.

Anyway, I need to get paint to fix this. What do you who are paint experts (Alex and Ray for instance) recommend on what kind of paint (maker) I should use and where I get it. Do you think whatever I'll need will need mixing.

Bear in mind that I know nothing about painting.

Tamiya XF-57 Buff is a near perfect match. Use fine brush for touch up and

feather the touched up area with a broad brush to perfect finish.

John,

Thanks. Since you're dealing with an unsophisticate here, what does feather mean. Also, any ideas where to get Tamiya paints?

Also, would that be water based or oil based?

Any good hobby model shop should carry it. It is acrylic (water base) so

clean up is simple. Buy youself some sable (natural hair brushes) though they

are made for oil paint they offer the best finish.

If you can get an assortment reasonable buy them they will be worth the

small investment. If not buy yourself a size 5/0 for detail work and a broader

fat brush for the feathering technique. Here is how I (by no means an expert)

do it. Apply the touch up paint with the 5/0 brush then use the broad brush

completly dry (no paint) to lightly dust the work area. This blends the paint

into the surface giving you a seemless repair.

Brush notes:

Synthetic brushes are for Acrylic paints (water base) because they will not absorbe water and lose there "spring"

Natural hair brushes are for oil paints because they absorbe water. I always use natural, force of habit.

If you are going to buy Tamiya paints I would suggest Desert Yellow XF-59. I just tried it and its a perfect match. Buff is to light but it could be used to highlight details. Get the 10ml bottles since its just a touch up.

If the places missing paint are gray, then you are okay. All the vehicles were regular German vehicles in the gray camo pattern and sprayed over with the desert yellow. They sometimes didn't paint the interiors of open afvs and often the lower portions of the vehicles. The vehicles and equipment also suffered from the sun and sand, which wore off the paint.

Yeah I know this may be breaking the eleventh commandment (thou shalt not kit bash a King & Country collectable), but.... why not add a little rust to add realism. Sandblasting in the desert that kind of stuff. I took the Conte Pack 40, added some yellow blotches, buff, and rust and put it in tow behind the Demag. I think it looks like its been in the North African sun for about a year. It will not ever look like the original German panzer gray gun that I bought, but so what...remember this for me is not an investment, its a hobby and a collection. Besides, now I have a one of a kind Conte' Pack 40. Michael

i have used the tamiya colors for little touch of paint on guns ,hands, noses (this last is frequently not painted from factory )and works great

Am i missing something here?

I was talking to Tony at K&C UK and as we were chatting he and Dave were opening all the products to inspect them before they were sent out.

I even saw them doing the same at the NEC in Birmingham and not hand over a figure due to the nose missing some paint. He said that the new packaging as good as it is for transit it does effect the underside (insome cases) of some paint work. He said that the LAH figures their helmets at the rear sometimes have paint missing.

So sorry back to my point do you guys get your figures unchecked by the delear? i as a 'naff' painter would like to think i open up and find a perfect figure and it goes straight on display.

The KC photos even show some gray here and there on the AK transport. Would paint only as a last resort. I think it is supposed to look that way.

Thank you all for your help. It's not just a case of paint missing but it looks like in a few places it was never painted. You can the metal, no colors there.

If you guys resell any of those touchups/repaints I hope you mention something in the eBay description :)

Oz,

I'm glad you mentioned including touch-ups in any potential ebay discription. I have had the same thought as you when I have read about making slight repairs in figures or re-glueing loose pieces. I know some people would spot those "improvements/repairs" very quickly and might be very upset with the seller if they were not mentioned in the description.

Warm regards,

Pat

I think (I hope) that most sellers are honest about touch ups.

Brad,
Not to beat a dead horse, but all the suggestions have been 100% spot on. I have a bottle of every color Tamiya makes and use them to touch up figures. As you have seen at the shows, some people are all thumbs when it comes to handling figures on my displays. Best of luck in touching up the items. Will you be at the show in Wayne at the PAL on the 9th? Let me know...............

George,

I'm planning to be and will be picking up some paint this weekend.

Thanks to everybody for your help.
