Ambushing the Redcoats! (1 Viewer)

As for the Del Prado figure, I merely meant that the Marine uniform doesn't match up with the Regulars that well. I personally like the Conte figures because even though they aren't the same scale, the poses are useful for extra figures to be used in the background of a diorama. The main issue I have with them is that the paint quality doesn't come close to K&C so I usually break out the paintbrush and try to touch them up a little.

Ooopss, okay I see now. Yep I agree 100%. In fact that is exactly how I use the Conte and "old" Britain’s. They are excellent to fill out a scene and provide the needed action poses. I haven’t had the courage yet to re-work a Conte!{sm2}

Well Firebat, welcome to the world of the American Revolution. We seem to be a small but "VERY DEDICATED" group as can be seen by the excellent dios that Cornwallis makes. Hope to see some of your collection.

There is not much to my collection right now.... I am planning a "Guess What".......a Battle of Monmouth Diorama. But I need to do a lot a lot of research. Would there have meen any Militia there or should I stick with only figures in uniform. Alex

Thanks everyone for the very kind comments, its always nice to get appreciation from the fine fellows on TF! :salute::

In answer to a few questions;

1. The buildings I use are of course the very fine WB barn and the house, woodshed and veggie plot are all scenics that I had custom made by Smallwondersmodels (who are amazing)!

2. Yes I am using Del Prado Marines as my casualties, carefully positioned within the grass mat you can kinda get away with using them (believe me I would MUCH rather have been using K&C dead and wounded figures)! ;)
I managed to buy a job lot of about 7 of these on ebay in appalling condition, with quite bad paint damage, but after sawing the bases off I thought they could just about pass off as dead troops.

Firebat - Just finished reading this recently, this could help with your diorama that you are planning.

Hi, Alex, I can recommend another title to you, "Monmouth Court House-The Battle that Made the American Army", by Joseph Bilby. Yes, there were militia, but I don't recall the specific units.

Bilby also examines the history of Monmouth County before the war, and shows how long-standing feuds carried forward into the war itself, similarly to the war in the Carolinas.

Prost!

Alex, this book Brad mentioned is one of only a few accounts of the Battle of Monmouth, so it it worth your time if you are wanting to start some research. The militia that were present were predominantly New Jersey militia under the command of a General Dickinson. They in fact fired the first shots of the battle, as some militiamen were escorting General de Steuben and were subsequently engaged by a patrol from the Queen's Rangers. According to the Osprey title on the battle, the specific counties with militia present were: Monmouth, Burlington, Hunterton, Middlesex, and Somerset.

Gentlemen

Thanks so much for the info, I am getting very enthused about this project. I have lived in this area for a while, yet I never paid close attention to my surroundings. I am going to walk the battlefield after I read the books, so I can get a feel for the terrain. We are so immersed in our WWII projects that this will be a refreshing change of pace. I assume the First Legion Militia would be a good purchase for this project ?

We did this a few years back for a company called Figurine Emporium.

Yes those FL Militia are fantastic figures and really plugged a HUGE gap in the market, they are just out of my reach price wise, but some of the guys on here have posted some very fine scenarios with them.

You could definately use them in your Monmouth set up.

PS - That winter scene is absolutely amazing, love it!

Once again thanks for your help......I forgot we did this scene.......But there was not much research needed, because I at least knew they were Valley Forge figures, and there was snow....:wink2: Alex

That is a great scene, Alex! Are those figures First Legion, or some other maker, and how much conversion work did you do? I don't collect any of the commercially finished figures, so I'm not up on them.

Yes, Bilby's book is one of many on the battle, though it's one of the newer ones. A Google search will return a lot of other resources, too. I don't know where you are in Jersey, but you might be close to the local resources.

Looking forward to seeing your project in progess!

Prost!

The figures ars sold by Figurine Emporium, Very Expensive !....We traded them the scene for the figures.

I live on the Monmouth Battlefield (Manalapan Freehold area) !..We have to check in with the historical people in town.

The project will be a while....we need more figures and research. Many of you have been most helpful and that is a good start.

Very nicely done. Especially like the single American figure in the deep background, it works.

You may have heard of this organization, then, the Friends of Monmouth Battlefield. They have a list of books up at their website:

Projects like this are **n, for the modeler and for members of the forum, to follow along.

Prost!
Brad

I contacted them.........Looks like they will be very helpful........ We had hoped to do a yearly event during the reenactment weekend. We would also have a tour of our "Headquarters" and a seminar at The Battleground Country Club across the street. The Seminar would be on all wars, collecting and dioramas etc. But that will take some planning. Alex
