Andy - We Want Italy ! (1 Viewer)

Can you still get the Airfix sets. Their British paras and American airborne were great. I would love to get hold of them.

There are consistently about 300 - 350 1/32 auctions at any one time on eBay UK, so they're readily available at pretty reasonable money. CTS have got alot of the molds (inc both Para sets). Airfix realistically stopped doing them in 1986(ish), but by then, there were so many out that most don't attract big money.

The Airfix series is what got me back in to toy soldiers. I dusted off my old ones from when I was a kid, then got a few nice box sets of my favourites, and now have pretty much every box set / style going (Self confessed completist with this range).
The 7th Cav and SAS were the best poses they did for my money, but I've got fond memories of them all.

Simon

7th cavalry were really good, used to put them with the cowboys as a kid.You can also pick up loads of airfix at the London shows.

the italians was in the ww2 one of most brave army, with poor weapons veichles and the side wrong choose from a bad leader,
we had man like Paolo Caccia Dominioni of 31th engineer in north africa
great commander and man

I've got em all even the rare Italians and still love em.

Best one though? It's an easy choice...

The German Paras. Loads of different poses. Great sculpts and a guy with his arm in a sling. What more can you ask?

Also Oh yeah Commando Comics. I bought one of those big volumes last year and had hundreds as a kid but my mom gave them to charity.

Luckily I still have a tatty collection of Battle Action comics!

Rob if you have access to a specialist comic shop look out for the Battler Britton 5 issue series from DC comics last year. Great action set in the desert!

Also try and find DC comics War Stories by Garth Ennis. You won't regret it i'm sure.

And while you're at it Ennis's "Nick Fury Peacemaker" has a great storyline set in WW2. Especially the first issue which takes place at Kasserine Pass and ends with a German General telling a battered Nick fury... "It's not like fighting the French is it?"

I have great sympathy for this - every nation seems to have leaders who put their own ego before the welfare of their men, but Mussolini was certainly one of the most inept.

Also every account I have read pays particular tribute to the quality of Italian artillery troops and when well lead, all Italian troops fought very well and bravely. As for toy soldiers, the Italian uniforms were class! I love the Italian patrol!

There are multiple opportunities here!

The basic US infantry, artillery, tankers, and paratroopers in the North Africa, Sicily and the early Italian campaigns were basically the same, so a "Mediterranean" campaign series would cover a number of bases from Torch through Husky to Avalanche.

US infantry, armor and paras, British infantry armor, and paras, Free French troops, including the Algerian Goumier mountain troops, Poles, South Africans, Kiwis. Later one could add the Brazillian expeditionary force. Italy was a true ALLIED effort, but after early 1944 was overshadowed by the ETO.

I know that Andy isn't into repaints, but some vehicles could be done as North Africa (tanks with white turret stripe, or mud camouflage) or SIcily (the 2nd Armored Div used sand bands over OD and a number of vehicles had a yellow circle around the white star). Many of the basic vehicles didn't change much over the first year. US stuff would include early Shermans, Less for North Africa, early M2 and M3 halftracks, "hard cab" GMC trucks, jeeps, etc. Artillery could include the little 37mm "pop gun" AT gun, up to the massive 155 Long Tom (with a Cat tractor to pull it (used before the "proper" trucks and tractors became available). For North Africa one could even do the M1918 French-type 155mm howitzer and the M3 halftrack tank destroyer.

Required movie watching: "The Story of GI Joe" which follows a US infantry company from North Africa into Italy.

Capitalron - not a bad idea. How did any orginial thinking come out of Washington?

Hi mate,i'm afraid we don't have a decent comic shop anywhere near us.I kept a load of commandos since childhood and have picked up loads at car boots sales.Battle action comics were good weren't they.
