March 1900

After the KHARTOUM had proved herself so very useful as a hospital ship in the Sudan campaigns General Kitchener had her sent to the tip of Africa in time to assist in the Anglo Boer War campaign 1899 -1902

Here a couple of Naval Brigade Officers, mounted on horseback, check out their surroundings

did you build the blue steam launch yourself?

Hi Michael

Many thanks for your interest, yes I converted a couple of small sailing boats I purchased from Giles at Dorset Toy Soldiers, I actually bought 3 and kept one in it's original form apart from adding an extra seat made from a lolly (Popsicle) stick :wink2:

Here are some pictures, first one shows the sailing boat before conversion, it has the added seat in place

The joy of these boats are that they are the right size for 54mm soldiers and the price never broke the bank.....far from it :wink2:

This picture shows the boat minus sail and with the steam launch pieces ready to be fitted. The funnel is made from a used glue stick tube, the coal sacks, coal tray, engine door and shovel head were made from Milliput plus balsa wood for the engine base.

Here is the boat with the pieces in place

Here is a picture showing the boat you pictured which was my second conversion, I placed the engine on this one slightly forward of the first one to give it a slightly different look, I also used a slightly larger glue stick and gave it a different paint finish

Here are the two steam launches together

There are several examples of the launch shown in the Illustrated London News, here is one. They gave me the idea for my launch

You are a true student of this conflict Sir. Very interesting.

very clever Martyn...

the changes you made to them make them much more unique without the repetition of clone boats...

you should buy some more...^&grin

God knows you have enough crew members in your collection to man a small armada...^&grin
