Interesting Martyn. I Thought the straw hat had been abandoned before the Boer War, always makes me think of HMS Warrior era.

All this got me to thinking about the Ashanti Wars !

I should have known the British Army and so by extension the Navy too love to hold on to kit way past it's use by date, such as Putties and wool shirts still being used in the eighties. I think it took the Falklands War to make them modernise.
On the photo, they don't look a happy lot, but then wearing straw hats in the rain going by the slick looking street ain't going to be full of the joys of life !
