Annandale Toy Soldier Show My 5 yr olds first & Special Thanks to George G. Minuteman

Whew, what a day. My 5 year old Logan and I started out from Maryland around 7:30AM for his first toy soldier show!! And we got snow!!

Anyhow, our itinerary included Ed Gries Toy Soldier Show in Northern VA and then coming back to Greenberg's Toy Train Show in Timonium!

Logan made out like a bandit with a little special help from George G. at Minuteman Toy Soldiers (Warrior on the forum). George passed on from another customer door prize tickets to Logan and you guessed it, Logan won the first door prize! I was very proud as he picked a Britains Set 7203 Royal Marine Band from the 1980s! I couldn't have been more proud as that is what I would have selected!!

So, we enjoyed the show albeit quickly as we were on a schedule, but he located a set of plastic desert toy soldiers as well as 2 fantasy 75mm figures (rubber) to occupy his time. Special thanks to toysoldierstore as well as Al Green of Green's collectibles and the Hobby Bunker!

So, I found a Gearbox all metal 1/32 Scale Sopwith Camel ww1 Plane, very cool! And met a contingent of N. VA Collectors.

Also special thanks to Thor J. from Aeroart as he took time to talk to Logan, I had to tell Logan, those are what Granpa collects and he better save his pennies!!!!!!!!!

With that, we were out in the snow driving to Greenberg Train show to meet Grandpa. Again, Logan made out like a bandit! First Grandpa treated him to a few toys, then I located 2 Corgi Muppets vehicles (Kermit and Animal, I think Animal was for me as he was a childhood favorite!!). Then of course we had the requisite Chicken Tenders and fries! And last but not least, the show find of the day!!!!!!!.......................... A Brand new in the box TIMPO set of the Prairie Locomotive with track, Cowboys, Indians, etc. Just a fabulous set, the gentleman who sold it to me kept asking if it was for me or Logan, I finally caved and said BOTH!!!

Fabulous day, I think I may have another toy soldier/train collector in the household!!!!!!!

Tom,

Glad you had a fun time with your son. Nice find on the Timpo Train. Were the cowboys masked bandits?

Hi Brian,
It is the Wild West Calvary Ambush Set, Indians vs 7th Calvary, it is battery operated and works. Again, most stuff still in plastic bags sealed (figures), etc. The inside is a 10, the outer box is a 7-8. For $35 can't beat it with a stick! I just couldn't believe it was sitting there at the train show. If I really lived up to my profession as a business man, I would flip it, but Logan and I will enjoy it and that matters more! It kind of fits my train collecting habits as they focus on the Old West and 440 "General" type engines.

Sounds like a great day all round :) Glad you were able to pickup some bargains. That train set is a nice one to be sure. Timpo train stuff always gets snapped up on eBay.

I like Timpo Trains I have four Timpo train sets. Timpo was my introduction to the world of toy soldier collecting. This is my favorite Timpo train set.

Very cool, I will try and post pics once we mess with it! I never really knew much about Timpo, but this caught my eye due to subject matter. Once I get the shelves built in my Office, I will post pics of my train collection. My late dad was a super collector of trains from the 40s as a kid until his passing. I have that whole collection boxed and stored at the moment, never been able to really sort and catalog as it holds a lot of good memories!

Great story, Tom! I'm glad you and Logan had such a good time. I look forward to seeing some photos of you and Logan playing with the Timpo wild west train set.:)

Re: Annandale Toy Soldier Show My 5 yr olds first & Special Thanks to George G. Minut

Update on the Timpo Train. Yes, it was never used, however, the figures are ultimately fragile and we have a few that have "injured" themselves while sealed in plastic! My son so far thinks its pretty cool, but in his words, its fragile, I had to laugh. His next comment was, let's leave it set up to look at and his Mom had the canary I knew was coming!!!!!!

Long story short, after that one, he then suggests that we should sell it on ebay like Daddy sells his duplicates so that he could buy something else less fraglie and more fun to play with. I nearly cracked up, he is a "with it" 5 year old.

Re: Annandale Toy Soldier Show My 5 yr olds first & Special Thanks to George G. Minut

Tom, Great to hear that you and Logan had a great time at the show. I was there as the doors opened and was kinda disappointed over all. I was looking for several Britains Agincourt sets to fill the gaps in my collection. I didn't see even one set of them let alone the sets I needed. :(

My fellow collector John who I rode down with did buy about 6 sets of First Legion Naps from Warrior.

The only figures I ended up buying were the Steadfast Orange Free State Boer War crew for their Pom Pom gun. The set was still in their original box. :D

Now I just need the gun itself to complete the scene. :p

Hi Tom,
To find this Timpo Wild West Cavalry Ambush Train here in the USA is AMAZING. And even more so in MINT condition. This train set is the most difficult Timpo train set to find, never seen one for sale in the USA. I have only seen 2 of them at the Toy Soldier shows in England and Germany in the 90's when I went to Europe to these shows and I bought both of them . This was the rarest and most expensive Timpo train set you could buy. I paid $400 for mine in nice complete condition, which I felt was a bargain in 1998. Your Train in Mint condition is Worth $750 in my opinion. The Timpo trains are sacled about 1/32 also. By the way, I assume the Train Detective is a BLACK color? Here are my pictures . THe broken Indians or Cavalry figures are easy and cheap to replace by the way, easy to find on ebay.I enjoyed your Timpo story, they are few and far between, Andy Moffat

That is the one! Good lord, had no idea, I bought it b/c I thought it looked cool and Logan loved it. Yes, Black color still in the stapled bag. I will look for multiple Indians, after your post I think I am putting this one up and away. I did have fun running the train with Logan, we were amazed!

Tom,
Great to see you at the show, you and the little guy, glad the tickets I grabbed for you were winners.

Thanks as well for in the info on the train show, I need to get to one of those as I am sure they are ho/oo scenery heaven for a collector like me...............

Re: Annandale Toy Soldier Show My 5 yr olds first & Special Thanks to George G. Minut

Tom,
I forgot to mention the Timpo Cavalry Ambush Train set was issued for only one year 1975. I have copies of Timpo catalogs and this was the only year it was pictured. I am still in disbelief such a set showed up MINT in the USA after 34 years. Andy

And for $35!

Re: Annandale Toy Soldier Show My 5 yr olds first & Special Thanks to George G. Minut

I will get pictures done tomorrow night. The only issues I have found after a thorough examination:

1. Caboose chimney had to be reattached
2. 2 Indian Mtd needed repair
3. One Calvary shot by arrow, arrow in side broke off piece in box, easily attached
4. One standing Indian with bow, half of bow broken, in box

All of these figures were sealed in the bags.

Box itself has a few tape marks, wear, call it a 6-7.5.

Train is spot on, put batteries in, fired up and running.

Amazing find at $35. I bought it b/c of Logan and it being a Western Rail, I collect every 440 General style engine made in O Scale (Lionel, MTH) and American Flyer (S). So honestly, it was pure dumb luck. Put this at the toy soldier show, it would have lasted 5 minutes.

TD

PS George, thanks again, you made Logan's day, it was your tickets! You have to do a train show, but I recommend not Greenbergs (too much big scale), they have another show that is called the "scale" show, way more ho and modelers, you would love that stuff!
