Anonymity and the Forum (1 Viewer)

As regards anonymity I agree with those who want to maintain their privacy, they can always get more personal with individuals if they think they are worth it.

My post appears to have been deleted:confused:Did i upset anyone?.

Well, it appears this post has taken off in a completly different direction. It was my understanding that the question was directed at if a dealer used an assumed identity and ripped some other dealer or manufacturer under this assumed name and it was discovered who that assumed person was, that the forum would reveal who it really was that made that denegrating post. Perhaps I have missed something. Of course it wouldn't be the first time.

Several posts were deleted because they had nothing to do with the topic at hand. While that often happens in any forum, the tone of many of the posts were -- how shall I say it without offending anyone -- not real positive and since they all seemed to relate to prices and doing what you want with your collection, I removed them all.

Frankly, it seems that the tone of the Forum lately has not been a good one and maybe it's time to shut it down for awhile.

One of my posts was among those deleted. In it I commented on (A) makers submitting new items on the threads and what was and was not acceptable as to how this was done. (B) my opinion on how criticism of other makers should be handled, and (C)my views on anonymity on the thread. there was NO mention of prices and NO mention of what I do with a collection (in point of fact I don't have one, preferring to concentrate on the reference side of things). All the above points were in line with the original comment by Peter Reuss. And yet this was arbitrarily deleted, presumely because it didn't fit in with someone else's opinion of what should or should not appear. To compound this it is then mooted that the entire forum should be closed down. Not just this thread but the whole shebang! Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?

My apologies for my over zealousness. I'm sure that one was a mistake.

Regarding the closing of the Forum, probably not likely, but the tone lately has not been a good one and it would be a positive step if it changed. Perhaps it has something to do with the economy putting people on edge.

Brad,
It's the news about Kilted Vampire. Everyone is scuttlebutted but we're all
praying for him and his family.

It is the economy also, so let's keep this as our safe haven!

I am sorry - but, I don't see the forum going into a free fall. We having the usual fights and insults by a few - which comes as expected when the subject matter turns towards the secondary market.

Peter - had a good thought to let the conversation run its course over should there be "transparency" with posters on this forum. Especially, with the ones who like to throw stones - we certainly have a few of those.

But, to strip every post off in the name of "helping the forum" - "keeping to the conversation" - is a little much IMHO.

To the thread's topic-I think the forum's rules and policies as they are currently constituted work just fine.

Prost!
Brad

Interesting way to answer a simple question......delete the question.

Mind telling me where.....or should I just Guess?

I just asked for clarity on how it was handled.

A simple question, if the original post was from a collector, no problem.

If it turned out to be a dealer, or manufacter, we should know that in all

fairness.

Simply put, was there perhaps another motive behind the statement?

In that case, you are correct it belongs here. My apologies if I deleted something that properly belonged here.

I just think that by asking people to reveal their identities if you don't agree with a particular viewpoint is not the way to go if you want to encourage more people to take part.

It's the same with all internet forums - most actors, authors, programme makers don't ever venture onto forums because they know they're not going to find much on there that they agree with or that is constructive to them.
Internet forums are just about people with similar interests having a chat.
If you start looking for hidden agendas it just seems a waste of time.

Think your spot on M8
I don't see why members have to suck up to King & county as well , there no need when there doing a great job in the first place

Are there any other consequences to knowing a poster's identity? In his post where he provides ten details about himself, Oberstoskar asked whether K&C, if it discovered his identity, would cancel his Hong Kong store club membership or refuse to sell him anything. Would a Forum member refuse to trade or not sell something to him if Oberstoskar used his real name and they now knew he was Oberstoskar? I hope not.:( this ,for me was the most wrenching awful post I've read here.To that point,I'd been feeling for the offended & offender, the offended,as it became clear that this is a sore spot & I anticipated his regret for an unconsidered, angry and bullying display, the offender, drawing wrath for being unaware of linguistic nuance, seemed genuinely horrified.I enjoy a merry prank,or a fabulous lie -so long as it's baldly obvious what I'm up to.I do not find it useful to pigeonhole others, since although we all evince trends of thought and taste-we are actually great messy multi-layered and multidimensional incomprehensibly complex entities(anonymity, as an existential concept is inescapable, the balm is kindness).I would be delighted to deal with Oberstoskar and I may just have to buy my first K&C piece-those Bastogne figures are VERY tempting.Sir Digby

The sad thing about this whole affair is that it could have been sorted out by a few PMs. Instead supporters and non supporters of the relevant parties have escalated the entire matter. The thing that worries me most is that the moderator, Jazzeum, has been so jaundiced by this one event that he condemns the entire forum as degenerating into something nasty, and suggests closing the whole thing down for a while. Well, until this thread was opened I was unaware of the argument, it happened on a thread I don't often visit, but I can assure you, Brad, that I have not encountered any back biting, sniping, or bad mouthing elsewhere. There are some people who take things very seriously, (and why not?) and others who have a more light hearted approach, and it matters not to me, and I suspect the majority of contributers, whether they identify themselves as Joe Bloggs or The Grim Reaper as long as their contribution is worth reading. Perhaps it would be to your advantage to take a weekend off and enjoy yourself, be self indulgent and get the bad taste out of your mouth.

You have the perspective of looking at one thread (which I probably cleaned up before you came along anyway). However, I also have the perspective of looking at all the threads and have been doing so for several years and generally have the pulse of what goes on here. Also, if you haven't seen a lot of backbiting, etc., it's probably becuase you're relatively new here and we work quite diligently to keep things moving along as well as possible. There's also a lot that goes on behind the scenes that I wouldn't expect you to know about nor is it something you should worry about.

As far as enjoying myself, I don't think you need to worry on that score; I'm probably too over indulgent:)
