That song about From sea to shining sea is also quite a good one.

I think Robert Plant and Jimmy Page should be commissioned to write a new Brit national anthem. Or maybe Clapton, seeing as he's become so friendly with Lizzie and her dysfunctional brood of in-breds.

OZ,
Sorry to hear your offended, I agree with you in that if half the jackasses on this site could stay near to topic, this crap wouldn't happen.

IMO, half the fun on this forum is seeing how threads develop to the point where they end up having nothing to do with the original posting, and then they usually come back to the original topic. If you look through this thread there's some very informative postings regarding 1812.
Having said that however, the subject of National Anthems has clearly got out of hand. If I myself have offended anyone with my daft comments about my National Anthem "God Save the Queen", then I most sincerely apologise.

This is the American version of "God Save the Queen:"

My Country 'Tis of thee
Sweet Land of Liberty
Of thee I sing
Land where my fathers died
Land of the Pilgrims' pride
from every mountainside
Let freedom ring!

America started the war of 1812 with the objective of invading and annexing Canada. That failed, so by default America lost the war. Just like in Vietnam - it doesn't matter how many battles you win if you don't achieve the original objective for the war.

And psychological good came out of the War of 1812 North of the border as well - because of how well Canadian militias performed defending our land, we started to develop an identity unique from Britain. Also, anglophone fought side-by-side with francophone for the first time which helped to unite our future country.

That was not our only objective though we wanted to stop impressment on our american sailors which we did. Also we wanted to end british military support of native american tribes which we also did. Not to get to technical but the annexing of Canada was not stated in the declaration of war although it was obviously one of our objectives.

Suggest you start up a campaign to get Mel Gibson to do a movie about it. That'll ensure you lot win and everyone will believe it.

I'd have to disagree; annexing Canada was not an official objective or an official cause of the war. It was an "added opportunity" (and obviously a goal, but NOT AN OFFICIAL ONE that was ever directly stated) so to speak. The US was successful in achieving our official objectives as Mitch pointed out; stopping impressment, and getting the Brits to quit supporting Indians. We Achieved these, our official goals, but at a high cost, so I would call it a draw.

Och, okay Tex, a draw it is.....:)

The real cause of the war was the War Hawks (where the term originated) in US Congress who thought they could take over Canada by taking advantage of Britain being tied up fighting Napoleon. The minor issue of impressment of sailors was blown out of proportion and used as excuse to go to war, just like "weapons of mass destruction" were used as an excuse for invading Iraq. The real reason for any war is rarely stated in official documents. Politicians are clever that way and their constituents are naive enough to lap it right up.

I agree that there was definitely an intent to take over Canada - the "manifest destiny" true believers wanted all of North, South and Central America to be part of the United States, but impressment of sailors was not a "minor issue". Our single biggest industry in the 19th Century was whaling, and the Brits kept talking our best and most qualified mariners to man their warships. I would never defend the war in Iraq (I agree it is our "ruling cabal's" effort to get control of a lot of oil and other resources) but if any country were seizing U.S. citizens and forcing them into military service elsewhere, you can bet your butt 100% of the American population would come down on the country in question like a ton of bricks, even today.

Canada and the USA now share the longest undefended border in the world.
I think we should leave it at that now
Regards
Damian
