Does anyone know if there has been any movement on this film? the last I heard was that it had been shelved awaiting funding. It would be a pity if the triumvirate was unfinished.

Last I heard it was dead in water on all fronts, money, script, etc. The failure of the 2nd film to make money really hurt chances for the 3rd film getting done. Maybe too much of a niche market? -- lancer

Lancer is spot on regarding this one; the failure of Gods and Generals at the box office sealed the fate of The last full measure, doomed to never see the light of day.

Gettsyburg itself was going to be a made for tv movie had not Turner pumped a raftload of dough into the making of the movie, yet the four times I saw it at the theater, the loudest cheer was when he gets offed during Picketts Charge.

Guess he's not viewed too kindly by the sons and daughters of the south..............

Why don't they make it for a TNT small miniseries, also why did Gods and Generals fail so bad?

JMO on G&G's failure but I believe it was poorly written and edited compared to G-burg. For whatever reason the writing (ie. dialogue) was really badly stilted. There were way too many long and unrealistic speeches. I thought some of the action sequences were good but the editing out of the entire Sharpsburg sequence was fatal to the story line as well as ticking off the numerous re-enactors involved. Although I heard that there was a longer cut of the film available to the participants, many were dissapointed in the theatre version, thus bad word of mouth. These combinations of things, IMO, and the fact it just did not cut across market lines to get big audiences as did G-burg, doomed G&G. -- lancer

Why are we still waiting for the definitive ACW movie? Other aspects of American history have had definitive movies, The Alamo, Iwo Jima, D-Day heck the west had a whole genre. What is the issue with the ACW?
I saw Gods and Generals and agree the acting was a bit stilted.

It has always puzzled me why there has never been a biopic of Bobby Lee or Grant. Either would make a great film which would tick all the boxes. How about Tommy Lee Jones as Lee? Don't know who could play Grant though.

Now if I had been producing, it would have been a miniseries, cut into episodes including California, Harper's Ferry, Texas, etc.

Good question! Never have come up with the reason why? only that nearly all ACW movies appear to be tagged with "box-office" poison. Mini series on TV seem to do better but they are normally awash with cliched love interests and major battles are depicted with 12 soldiers either side. Gettysburg and Glory came close to being the epitome of definitives for civil war films even though both were full of inaccuracies. But the producers deserve to be applauded for both efforts.

As stated G&G was too wordy and the script made old Jack out to be just a sympathetic bible punching idiot and hardly referred to his killer instinct; battle brilliance or his relationship with Lee. And agree cutting out Lee's first invasion of the North culminating at Antietam destroyed the heart of the movie. (As an aside HarrytheHeid has seen the full version on a Chinese DVD but although promised many times for a world release it never happened) Plus unlike Gettysburg which was one battle over three days G&G tried to cover three years and just lost the audience-The Last Full Measure would be the same recipe without clever editing and marked milestones to keep the audience up with the story. Best chance if they can sought out the litigation which is still flying around following the aftermath of G&G would be a TV mini-series but forget the big battle scenes if that happened.

Tommy Lee Jones would be a good Lee-Gibson or Crowe might do a reasonable job as Grant but again none of them would be interested in a TV production!

I thought Robert Duvall did a good job as Lee in G&G - at least he is a true southerner - unlike that disaster with Sheen in Gettysburg - ugh !

It still breaks my heart today that those idiots cut out the Sharpsburg scenes ! You cant tell the true G&G story without Sharpsburg.

Why are we still waiting for the definitive ACW movie?

Until then, it is The Civil War, a Film y Ken Burns. I find it more fascinating than any movie adaptation so far. But perhaps you contact the producers of Band of Brothers?

Totally disagree. Sheen was sympathetic. I like Duvall just not as Lee. Waaaay too wooden. All in all G&G was a horrible movie. The music was unmemorable unlike Gettysburg. Even the civilian clothing was bad. Director Ron Maxwell now does the right-wing talk circuit.

I thought Duvall looked more like Lee but sheen put more hart into the Role.
Love watching Gettysburg seing tom chomping on his cigar as Longstreet.
but Sam Elliot steels the Movie...

Interesting comments. I have had many arguments with people over Sheen as Lee. I thought he did a good job. As to who stole the show, I thought Stephen Lang as Pickett and Richard Jordan as Armistead were the winners. All in all, "Gettysburg" outshown "G&G" in EVERY aspect. -- lancer

I think Duvall looked more like Lee but, Sheen seemed to capture the personality better from all that I've read about Lee. I agree that Sam Elliott had a memorable role as Buford but, Jeff Daniels definitely pulled it off the best as Chamberlain. :)

I loved Gettysburg, thought all the actors were great, including Martin Sheen as Lee. I couldn't make it through Gods & Generals, it was just that bad.

Added to the awful-ness was the dark lighting around the Union characters and the troubled marriage of Chamberlain. The Confederate characters had bright lighting ('cept at night) and Jackson's marriage looked perfect. I loved Kali Rocka as Mrs. Jackson. One friend said even the Confederate children were cuter! The loyal slaves got to me.
I do like Stephen Lang in both the Picket and Jackson roles. He's pretty good as Ike Clanton too.

Gods and Generals was a long and boring movie,I loved Gettysburg.Historical movies never draw blockbuster numbers so when somebody makes one they need to try something special in them.As for ACW movies they need to pinpoint one story.Gettysburg worked because it was the defining battle of the war.Glory worked because it was about one regiment and the soldiers in it.Horse Soldiers worked because it was about a specific event. The ACW was too large to be able tell years of conflict in a single movie.A book can do that but not a movie.
