This morning the whole of the country was encouraged to be outside, in their driveways, on balconies or outside to commemorate ANZAC Day with a National Dawn Service. There was no public gatherings like usual for the dawn services and for the street parades, but in this way we, as a nation, could commemorate the fallen, and keep the tradition alive.
The National Service was broadcast, ( TV, Radio and on-line) over 3 time zones, to commence at 0530hrs and at 0600hrs the Last Post was played, followed by the 1 minutes since, then the Reveille. In our street most people came out onto the roadway and stood in family groups, keeping the social distancing, and contemplated the even in 1915 that started this tradition. There were veterans wearing their own medals, some people wearing their parents medals, and kids holding candles all in silence until near then end when both the New Zealand and Australian Nation Anthems were sung.
A most moving event, and this would have to be most people ever that have participated in the Dawn Service !!
Lest We Forget.
