Are There Any new Romans for 2012? (1 Viewer)

I bet Matt does!^&grin Actually, there aren't any out yet. You can bet there will be a number of them in 2012, as Matt has hinted as much. For now, we have some workbench pics of a couple of the upcoming Germans. Plus, there was also a new Roman teaser pic added to the FL home page a week or two ago, which some guys have speculated will be some cavalry.

I hate to say this, as much as I have tried to stay disciplined to only collecting ACW and AWI, today I broke down and ordered my first FL Roman Legionnaires. Ever since I saw First Legion's Roman figures at the Chicago OTSN show I have had these on my mind. I almost bought several then at the show but stayed the course and bought AWI and ACW figures instead. Anyway, I orderd four figures this afternoon; ROM001 Roman Legionnaire w/Gladius, ROM007 Roman Legionnaire Throwing Pilum, ROM011 Roman Centurion, and ROM023 Mounted Legate. Its a small start to what I hope is an interesting subject . . . ..
:) Mike

Hi Mike ,
I got a good laugh from this one {sm4} .. I know how you feel . I bought the first 10 when they came out and I'm planning on trying to add at least one or two each month to my order :redface2: I'm sure you will be happy with them and I really look forward to seeing you set your skills on displaying them ..as its not only fun for you but the rest of us as well .. Regards Gebhard

Here are some of the new Romans I received mixed in with some older ones from FL. When I have a chance I'll put some more photos up. These figures are amazing and the Legate is a piece that can stand on its own!

That is a great looking group Sahara! I'm afraid I'm falling into the same trap as Mike. This Roman line is so impressive, I don't know if I can resist them much longer. It will be even tougher once the first Germans are released!

They look great Joe.Will go great with the new diorama piece you ars getting.

Very nice looking Joe . . . now bring on the Germanic figures. See, now the Romans are even tempting Noah . . . .

I can't help but notice that the FL Romans are not wearing Braccae, trousers that were worn under the tunic and came down to just below the knee. From my very limited reading, I have an understanding that Braccae were popular amongst the Roman Legionnaires who were stationed in cooler climates in the north. How common was this or was it common at all?
:) Mike

Hey Mike, I'll try to take a stab at it from what I have read on the Roman Uniform. From what I have gathered the trouser or Braccae was not adopted until the 2nd century. The belief prior to the second century was that the trousers were to foreign looking. In several of my books there has been several references that indicate that the Roman auxiliaries wore trousers long before the 2nd century. Point being it seemed that the Roman Legionaries wanted to stay different then their auxiliary counterpart since they were recruited generally from provinces of the Roman Empire where the people didn't hold Roman citizenship.

You need some barbarians my friend to complete this nice scene....

Great job

Just to add a little more to what Sahara already said, it seems the trousers were common long before the period of these figures. I have read that originally, the Greeks first encountered such breeches in their contact with the Scythians in the 5th Century BC. From nomadic tribes like these, the concept of the breeches were passed on to the Gauls and Celts. Later, like Sahara noted, as more of these 'barbarians' were integrated into the Roman army, more auxiliaries started to wear them. In fact, most of the non-legionary figures on Trajan's Column, including Roman officers and even Trajan himself, are depicted as wearing breeches.

I have also read that some well-known Roman writers referred to the breeches as being effeminate and a mark of the barbarians, which made them something no true Roman would want to wear!^&grin
