Today seems like a good day to remember or recollect this event 50 years ago today. My attending college in Washington dovetailed with his term as president; my dorm in college was only a five minute walk to the White House. When he was re-elected in 1972, as they got ready for his second inaugural, they posted these signs all over Washington; I swiped this one that was across the street from my dorm. Hope they’re still not looking for me.
The day I finished my last exam in college was the day his trusted advisors, Haldeman and Ehrlichman aka the Germans, resigned. When I got back to my dorm after my test, my friends Jeff and Steve told me they had quit. We celebrated by getting high.
I was back in Washington in the summer of 1974 doing some research as Watergate percolated along. I rented a place for the summer with two other guys and on August 8 we watched his resignation speech. What I remember mostly about that was that it was a typical Washington hot and humid day. We didn’t have an air conditioner, just a fan, and the sweat just dripped off your body. When the speech was over and the decision made, it was mildly celebratory but more a relief that he was finally gone, once and forever.
