Hi Guys,
Before left home this morning saw the news mentioning the Brisbane suburbs that would be flooded later in the day. Included the city centre as Brisbane river rising fast.
Drove to the shop on the north side (about 10 km from city centre) through very heavy rain. Checked shop OK and then returned to south side as was expecting traffic problems later (which happened at 1pm as city workers went home). Went to watch a movie with Gerelou and then popped into a supermarket for a few items.
You know something is up when all the bread and bottled water has sold out and there are the biggest queues I have ever seen in a supermarket. Bought a bit more than we expected !
Floods in Toowoomba (2nd largest inland city in Australia) yesterday were incredible and the problem has been the speed at which it happened. Cars and even a small plane floating down the road. The creek rose 8 metres in 4 minutes. Complete homes swept away and one apparently went 20 km. Some areas there received 6" of rain in half an hour and problem has been the ground is already soaked so not draining away.
Problem has been we have had very heavy rain for 3-4 weeks already.
One terrible story was the family escaping through a hole onto the roof. The father helped his two adult children through and and when the son looked back to pull his father up his father had gone as the flood swept through their house so quickly. Another was the image of a family stuck in their car being swept along with the mass of water. They were later seen on the roof but not sure what happened to them.
Ipswich (much nearer to Brisbane) also having serious flooding. Main flooding in Brisbane expected tomorrow and Thursday as river has burst its bank. Expecting 9,000 homes to be flooded. Residents advised to stay at home.
Some of the northern suburbs were ordered to evacuate this morning. Chris (Simpson and Donkey) and Matt (OzDigger) live nearer to those areas so hopefully they are OK. Wayne lives in Perth and is about as far away from Brisbane as you could get. If he is wet it is because he is at the beach !
75 % of state affected. So far cost estimated at $10 billion. Many areas cut off and can only be accessed by helicopter.
