Saw the tail end of a report on the massive floods in Australia. What in the world caused that?

Rain and lots of it!........Queensland is a massive state {think texas x3}
They produce a lot of food and this should have an effect on food prices worldwide.
This all started in mid december and its still going on...I do feel sorry for them.

Not just the water, the whole flooded area is now being infested with venomous snakes and crocodiles! Just imagine, evacuating to the upper story of your house to escape the water thinking things couldn't be worse and going downstairs to have a look and finding a dirty great croc regarding you with interest! Sympathy is just not enough.

I am in Brisbane and whilst we have had a serious amount of heavy rain in past few weeks we have not had actual flooding. However furher north and to our west there is totally about a million square miles flooded. As they keep repeating it is more than the area of Germany and France combined.

Will seriously affect mining, grain, fruit and veggie prices and many cattle drowning as can not get to high ground. Some towns totally cut off. A MAJGEN just been put in charge of the recovery.

A couple of years ago some of those areas were in drought and we had to watch our water use. Now all the dams are overflowing.

Regards
Brett

Hard to visualize such a vast area that is flooded. I pray that the people will recover rapidly. -- Al

Me too!!

Marc- I caught wind of it right around new years on the news. The proportions of this thing boggle the mind- almost makes you think the continent is sinking!!

I hope the United States is mobilizing to help our friends and allies down under. They stood by us in Vietnam, we should stand by them in their hour of need.

Guys,
Floods in the beautiful State of Queensland getting worse. The rural town of Toowoomba, 130 Kms west of Brisbane, the State capital was hit by an 8 metre high wall of flashflood water. 13 dead and 66 missing.
The City of Brisbane where Treefroggers known to you Brett, Chris (Simmo) and Matt (Oz Digger) live is on total flood alert as the Brisbane river will break its banks within the next 24 hours and flood over 6500 homes and businesses.
Heavy torrential rain continues to come down. The Prime Minister has placed the entire Defence Force on full alert to go to the aid of good people of Queensland. I feel for my good mates in the usually called "Sunshine State".
Cheers Howard

The Brisbane River broke it's banks at midday today (about 7 hours ago) and people in the lower areas of Brisbane are being urged to evacuate.

Sorry just realised,I left Brett out of my post there, hope you are ok too Brett:)

Hi Guys,
Before left home this morning saw the news mentioning the Brisbane suburbs that would be flooded later in the day. Included the city centre as Brisbane river rising fast.

Drove to the shop on the north side (about 10 km from city centre) through very heavy rain. Checked shop OK and then returned to south side as was expecting traffic problems later (which happened at 1pm as city workers went home). Went to watch a movie with Gerelou and then popped into a supermarket for a few items.

You know something is up when all the bread and bottled water has sold out and there are the biggest queues I have ever seen in a supermarket. Bought a bit more than we expected !

Floods in Toowoomba (2nd largest inland city in Australia) yesterday were incredible and the problem has been the speed at which it happened. Cars and even a small plane floating down the road. The creek rose 8 metres in 4 minutes. Complete homes swept away and one apparently went 20 km. Some areas there received 6" of rain in half an hour and problem has been the ground is already soaked so not draining away.

Problem has been we have had very heavy rain for 3-4 weeks already.

One terrible story was the family escaping through a hole onto the roof. The father helped his two adult children through and and when the son looked back to pull his father up his father had gone as the flood swept through their house so quickly. Another was the image of a family stuck in their car being swept along with the mass of water. They were later seen on the roof but not sure what happened to them.

Ipswich (much nearer to Brisbane) also having serious flooding. Main flooding in Brisbane expected tomorrow and Thursday as river has burst its bank. Expecting 9,000 homes to be flooded. Residents advised to stay at home.

Some of the northern suburbs were ordered to evacuate this morning. Chris (Simpson and Donkey) and Matt (OzDigger) live nearer to those areas so hopefully they are OK. Wayne lives in Perth and is about as far away from Brisbane as you could get. If he is wet it is because he is at the beach !

75 % of state affected. So far cost estimated at $10 billion. Many areas cut off and can only be accessed by helicopter.

Have been watching all the events you describe Brett on the BBC, it looks just awful, hope everyone on here is ok. Sounds like you had quite a dramatic day Brett, did you manage to get any bottled water anywhere, I can imagine how that flew off the shelves. I hope the waters recede soon and the recovery can begin, best wishes from the uk.

Rob

Brett if you need to offload your toysoldiers send them down my way :D.
But all kidding aside hope you guys get thru this ok.
Rob,

Rob in UK,
Nothing dramatic at all so far for me personally (fingers crossed).

Rob in Oz,
Unfortunately my toy soldiers are very poorly equipped to travel by water. Only 1 K&C landing craft and a few TG dinghies available. Aircraft are only fighters so not much help there. Their leaders are having a planning session but the four Adolphs are causing problems and Winston, Ike and Monty are getting very frustrated. Doenitz and some of his U boat commanders are looking for their boat but unfortunately they are looking in vain as somebody sold it.

Regards
Brett
